UNC's Department of American Studies has explored the developing cultural entity we call 'America' for more than fifty years. We are committed to interdisciplinary study on the grounds that to begin to understand America we need to consider its history, its politics and institutions, and the many and varied cultural products in which Americans express their identities, values, and concerns. We consider the study of folklore and vernacular culture to be an essential component of this interdisciplinary approach.
