HVAC MECHANIC - JLL What this job involves: Performs duties described in the Service Contract Act Directory of Occupations under HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING MECHANIC. May perform duties of other classifications that have a pay rate equal to or lower than the employee's current rate. What your day-to-day will look like:
- The Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for installing, servicing, and repairing environmental control systems in residential and commercial establishments including department stores, office buildings, and other facilities using comprehensive knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting principles, and structural layout requirements.
- Installation responsibilities encompass mounting compressor and condenser units on designated platforms or floors using hand tools while following detailed blueprints and engineering specifications, fabricating and assembling ductwork and chassis components using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
- System assembly duties include installing evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems, cutting and bending tubing to precise measurements using specialized equipment, cutting and threading pipes with machine or hand-threading tools, and joining components through sleeves, couplings, and unions with proper soldering techniques.
- Refrigerant system work involves installing expansion and discharge valves, connecting motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and ventilation fans to control panels while establishing proper connections to power sources and installing air and water filtration components.
- Testing and calibration procedures require injecting refrigerant into compressors to evaluate system performance, adding freon gas to achieve prescribed operating pressures, monitoring pressure and vacuum gauges, adjusting controls for optimal operation, and testing joints and connections for gas leaks using gauges or soap solutions.
- Maintenance and repair activities include wrapping pipes in insulation batting and securing with cement or wire bands, replacing defective components such as breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring using electrician's tools and testing equipment.
- Specialized capabilities may extend to installing, repairing, and servicing large-capacity air conditioning units ranging from fifteen to twenty tons cooling capacity in warehouse and small factory environments while performing additional duties as requested to support comprehensive HVAC operations.
Required Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent education serves as the minimum educational requirement for this HVAC Mechanic position.
- At least two years of prior experience in HVAC repair and maintenance work is required to demonstrate technical competency and practical knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Essential skill requirements include the ability to effectively use both hand tools and power tools necessary for HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair operations.
- A valid driver's license is mandatory for transportation to various job sites and service locations as part of daily work responsibilities.
- Professional certification requires a current Journeyman HVAC Mechanic license specifically issued by Duval County to ensure compliance with local regulatory standards and professional qualifications.
- Universal EPA Certification must be maintained in accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F regulations governing refrigerant handling and environmental protection requirements.
- All licensing and certification requirements must remain current and in good standing throughout employment to ensure continued compliance with federal, state, and local regulations for HVAC mechanical work.
