Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. There are 42 faculty members, 39 SHRA positions, 230 graduate students, 50 postdoctoral research associates, 400 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of ca. 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in three buildings with 287,000 sq. feet of space. The department's teaching faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per class per semester. The majority of faculty are research active, in addition to supervision of graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than thirteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department. The National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes and the Institute for Advanced Materials have separate administrative structures but depend administratively on the Chemistry department.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The primary purpose of this advanced administrative position is to apply knowledge of programs, policies, and procedures to provide office support to faculty, staff, and students within the Chemistry Department. The faculty administrative support team reports directly to the Executive Assistant. Each faculty administrative support role performs specific responsibilities for faculty members in the department. Each support personnel is expected to provide similar and consistent support to individuals within the department.

This role is primarily responsible for providing general office support, processing, and technical troubleshooting for students, faculty, and staff. In this role, you will be cross-trained in various processes and systems, including accounts payable, voucher processing, procurement, and coordinating reimbursements. This position is the lead coordinator responsible for managing supply purchase orders, providing academic support, and handling confidential and sensitive documents. This role will also independently respond to requests and inquiries from department stakeholders with written explanations of established policies, procedures, and programs.

This role will require individual problem-solving to resolve unprecedented issues and problems independently. This problem resolution will primarily require interpreting departmental policies and procedures.

This position facilitates effective workflow throughout the dynamic administrative work unit and is vital to the administrative support team's success. The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest departments on campus, and it requires high-level support.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred candidate will have prior experience in higher education, accounts payable, travel systems, and working in an office setting.

Physical effort required for the position includes, but not limited to: standing and bending for extended periods of time during events and lifting/moving up to 25 pounds including tables, chairs, and catering supplies.
