SOUND MIXER/SOUND DESIGNER II

As a Sound Mixer / Sound Designer at SpaceX, you will play a vital role in enhancing the audio quality of our video content to immerse audiences in the excitement of development of the world's most advanced rockets and spacecraft. With a focus on technical precision and creative audio craftsmanship, you will contribute to delivering polished soundscapes that complement our visual storytelling. This is a multifaceted role where you will handle post-production audio tasks and on-site recording to capture authentic field audio during missions, interviews and operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Perform sound sweetening and dialogue audio mixing for recurring series and ongoing video projects, ensuring clarity, balance, and emotional impact in post-production.
  • Design immersive sound elements, including effects, ambiance, and foley to elevate the narrative of SpaceX's missions and hardware developments.
  • Collaborate on audio post-production for major space missions and promotional content, integrating sound to enhance visual storytelling and technical excellence.
  • Occasionally conduct sound recording in the field and on set, capturing high-quality audio during launches, testing phases, and internal events to support comprehensive content creation.
  • Maintain and organize audio equipment, ensuring optimal performance for both on-site and studio environments to meet production deadlines.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including editors, cinematographers, communications members, and engineers, to align audio with the overall creative vision and elevate content quality.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in sound mixing, sound design, and/or audio post-production.
  • Experience working for global clients and brands.


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:



  • 10+ years of demonstrated expertise as a sound mixer or designer, showcasing a portfolio that reflects excellence in dialogue mixing and creative soundscapes.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard audio software (e.g., Pro Tools, Fairlight) and hardware for mixing, editing, and field recording.
  • Knowledge of Ableton, Apple Logic, or other music editing software is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail in audio sweetening and design, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in fast-paced production environments.
  • Experience in occasional on-set and field recording, including boom operation and location audio capture under varying conditions.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends in audio technology and best practices to innovate and improve the sonic quality of SpaceX's video content.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS



  • Please provide examples of prior work with your application.
  • Must be willing to work some weekends to support launch operations and critical project timelines.
  • Willingness to travel to remote launch sites or production locations as needed.
  • This role is 100% onsite at our Hawthorne, CA office and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:

Sound Designer/Level II: $90,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
