The Woodworker Lead is responsible for overseeing a team of woodworkers and ensuring all carpentry, crating, and packaging functions are performed safely, accurately, and in accordance with Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Distribution contract requirements. This position plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations by constructing, repairing, and modifying wooden containers and related products for military and government supply chain operations. Primary Responsibilities
- Lead, train, and mentor woodworkers to meet performance standards and deadlines.
- Assign daily tasks and monitor progress to ensure compliance with workload requirements.
- Construct and repair items such as boxes, crates, pallets, and storage bins from wood and wood substitutes, using specifications, patterns, templates, and hand/power tools.
- Build custom crates around equipment and material as required to support shipping and storage.
- Repair defective containers by replacing damaged parts, inserting bracing, or adding protective fillers such as felt pads or cardboard.
- Apply preservatives, sealants, and markings to containers in accordance with military standards (MIL-STD-129 and other applicable guidance).
- Operate hand tools, pneumatic tools, nail guns, and saws safely and effectively.
- Ensure all work meets quality, safety, and contract compliance requirements.
- Use Warehouse Management System (WMS) and other Government Data Systems to document, track, and process work actions.
- Coordinate with supervisors and government quality inspectors to resolve discrepancies and meet customer requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of woodworker/carpenter experience, including crate building and repair.
- At least one (1) year in a lead, supervisor, or team-lead role.
- Knowledge of carpentry methods, hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic nailers.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
- Familiarity with DLA Distribution standards, including MIL-STD-129 marking and packing requirements.
- Proficiency in using Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or similar automated systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a warehouse environment.
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a favorable background check as required by the contract.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working under DLA Distribution contracts or in a DoD logistics environment.
- Knowledge of Packaging, Preservation, and Packing (PPP&M) standards.
- Forklift license or material handling certification.
Working Conditions This position is located in a warehouse environment. Work may require standing, bending, lifting, and operating tools and machinery. Safety gear (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, etc.) must be worn as required. Work Environment: General warehouse environment.
