Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Library Assistant - Casual for Rutgers Libraries. This position supports the daily operations of Access Services at Dana Library, with a primary focus on circulation, patron assistance, and student worker support.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Ensures smooth service at the front desk and may also contribute to Resource Sharing and Course Reserves workflows.
- Welcomes and assists users with both routine and complex information needs, helping to foster a positive and inclusive library experience.
- Delivers circulation services such as processing checkouts, returns, holds, fines, and record updates for patrons and materials.
- Provides clear guidance to patrons on library policies and services, interpreting procedures for both users and part-time staff.
- Resolves routine and non-routine service issues with accuracy and tact; refer unresolved concerns to a supervisor when necessary.
- Teaches patrons how to use My Account, renew items, request materials for pickup or digitization, access interlibrary loan services, and locate course reserve materials.
- Offers welcoming, front-line support by answering questions, directing users within the library, and assisting with general and specialized collections (e.g., Jazz, Newark Collection, etc).
- Works effectively with MS Office applications and library systems (e.g., ALMA, discovery tools, ILS) to carry out the work of the Access Services unit.
- Monitors and guides student employees in their daily work, ensuring accuracy and consistency in circulation tasks and system use.
- Provides ongoing support, training, and mentorship to student staff, serving as a reliable resource and point of reference.
- Performs light clerical and operational tasks, including sorting mail, filing, responding to phone inquiries, and maintaining orderly collections through shelving and shifting.

- Saturday 1:00-5:30 p.m., Tuesday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., and Thursday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
