The Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture (DPLA) is a dynamic network of scholars and stakeholders working to advance healthy, prosperous, equitable, and sustainable built and natural environments in the tradition of the Wisconsin Idea and from the local to global scale. DPLA's scholarship and educational activities will advance sustainable and livable communities, cities, and regions that are vibrant, thriving, and resilient. This is accomplished through integrative teaching, research, and public engagement that seeks solutions to serve human needs and protect the integrity of natural environments. The department, based upon the disciplines of landscape architecture and urban and regional planning, provides opportunities to explore interdisciplinary research, design, planning, and policy analysis at local, regional, and global scales.

We are seeking candidates for a Lecturer position instructing one, 3-credit course (URPL 833 Planning and the Legal System) per academic year, generally during the spring semester.

This position is part-time, 33.4%

The course taught by this position will primarily serve the MS in Urban and Regional Planning program but may contribute to any of the five academic programs in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist in defining the objectives of the department's academic programs and play a role in carrying out program duties

  • Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
  • Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
  • Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations

Compensation:

The typical starting salary for this position is $17,008 (prorated based on the full-time salary of $51,000) depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as sick leave; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits. Employees have the option to continue benefits for the full calendar year.

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise/ability to facilitate classroom, online, and/or field instruction for courses in the legal and institutional aspects of land use planning, land development, or community development (or closely related topics), including assessment of student performance
  • Expertise/ability to develop instructional design and curriculum relevant to the legal and institutional aspects of land use planning, land development, or community development (or closely related topics)
  • Expertise/ability to serve as a point of contact for students as it relates to courses, programs, or career development expectations in the legal and institutional aspects of land use planning, land development, or community development (or closely related topics)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience (including academic or professional experience) in land use planning, planning law, community development law, or closely related topics
  • Recent experience teaching or mentoring, in a university or professional setting, in the legal and institutional aspects of land use planning, land development, community development, or closely related topics
  • Written and verbal communication skills relevant to a professional workplace
  • Computing skills relevant to a professional workplace

Education:
  • A Juris Doctorate, master's degree or equivalent in planning or related field, or a PhD or equivalent in planning or related field. An academic/professional specialization in land use, land use law, land use controls, community development law, public policy, or public administration.
