About the Role

Reporting to the Associate Publishing Director, the Senior Editor manages a team of publishing editors and oversees journals within the Springer Current Reports series, a portfolio of medical and scientific review journals. This role involves managing a team of in-house publishing editors with commissioning targets, engaging with external editors and editorial board members, and delivering on portfolio budgets and performance targets. The role also includes contributing to the overall success of the Springer Journals publishing unit by supporting team development, internal collaboration, and acting as a visible publishing leader.

This role can be in our Philadelphia or New York offices on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities:

Editorial Oversight and Publishing Development

  • Achieve annual targets related to program growth, editor onboarding, and strategic initiatives.

  • Ensure a best-in-class author experience is standard across the portfolio.

  • Actively acquire and commission content in alignment with journal article budgets.

  • Develop and implement Journal Improvement Plans to address challenges and guide growth.

  • Maintain detailed records and reporting across all journals and team activities.

  • Stay informed on research and content trends to ensure journal topics and editorial policies remain current and relevant.

  • Collaborate with editorial colleagues on new project opportunities, especially in overlapping subject areas.

Team Leadership and Management

  • Oversee team operations, including status tracking, team meetings, and content planning support.

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and clear objective setting for publishing editors.

  • Promote skill development and continuous improvement across the team, helping team members achieve development goals.

  • Ensure high standards of editorial reporting and performance.

  • Act as a leader across the entire Current Reports team, supporting management communications and actions.

External Engagement

  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with authors, editors, and contributors.

  • Organize and lead editorial board meetings to assess journal performance and content needs.

  • Develop and maintain international editorial boards.

  • Respond to the needs of external stakeholders to support journal development and contributor satisfaction.

Strategic Contribution

  • Drive growth of assigned journal portfolio in alignment with strategic goals of Current Reports.

  • Consistently cultivate strategic insights for the development of your portfolio.

  • Contribute to long-range planning and development of the Current Reports program in collaboration with the Associate Publishing Director.

  • Demonstrate initiative and operate independently while contributing to team and unit objectives.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Experience, Skills, & Qualifications

  • Educated to Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study.

  • Relevant experience in academic publishing or a similar editorial role.

  • People management experience is preferred but not required.

  • Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.

  • Self-motivated, collaborative, leadership, capable of managing multiple projects and shifting priorities.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Senior Editor: $91,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
