Job Summary Provide direct patient care, assistance to clinicians with patient care-related activities, and supervision and education to students, primarily in the Specialty Services are at The Eye Institute (TEI). Essential Functions
- Monitor patient flow and clinician activity in EHR (NextGen), especially in the testing area, to ensure a smooth flow of patient care.
- Work with assigned students to ensure that they are properly trained in selected patient care procedures, techniques, and systems; including evaluating student performance through Meditrek (grading system).
- Provide direct patient care services, including visual field testing, ocular photography, nerve fiber analysis, optical coherence tomography, ultrasonography, vision screenings, contact lens dispensing and training, pre-exam data collection, and patient education.
- Assist in ensuring that all hardware, small equipment, and software used are functional and ready to use for patient care activities. Report non-functioning or defective equipment to the supervisor immediately.
- Stock clinical workstations, and exam/procedure rooms as assigned.
- Ensure that all supplies are up to date and initiate the reorder of supplies as needed.
- Facilitate the coordination of patient care services within the clinic and Specialty Care (e.g. specialty testing and primary care appointments; Retina and Glaucoma Services).
- Obtain medical records in advance of patient appointments, when needed.
- Assist providers with medication refills and prior authorizations by evaluating all patient medication refill requests for validity and necessity. Process all appropriate requests and document refill orders in the medical records.
- Problem-solve and make guided decisions about patient care issues and area function.
- Assist in ensuring that all small equipment for specialty services is functional and ready to use for patient care activities. -
- Assist in the management of infectious waste.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a HS Diploma or GED
- Minimum of One year of experience working as an optometric or ophthalmic technician.
- One year of experience working as an optometric or ophthalmic technician.
- Must obtain COA or CPOA certification within 18 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and excellent telephone manners.
- Experience with computers, including knowledge of and experience with word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
- CPOT or COA certification preferred.

Additional Information This position is classified as Non-Exempt, grade I Compensation for this grade ranges from $19.69 to $29.54 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
