OPEN RECRUITMENT

This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) position/function only. All interested persons will need to re-apply for any future recruitment conducted for this classification.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. For over 50 years, the MDTA has provided Maryland's citizens and visitors with safe, secure, and convenient transportation facilities. Nature of Work: The Radio Shop Field Technician is responsible for technical support work installing, repairing, maintaining, programming, and modifying devices such as digital microwave radios, base stations, portable radios, mobile radios, radio consoles, automatic radio traffic recorders, wireless transmitters/receivers, and two-way mobile communications systems.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts the removal, maintenance, repair, and installation of fixed, mobile, portable, and specialized electronic equipment;
  • Troubleshoots and tests all equipment for technical malfunction and conformance to established specifications; and
  • Replaces and repairs defective components.

Employees in this position receive general supervision from the Radio Shop Manager or other designated supervisor. The current vacancy exists at the Francis Scott Key Bridge Maintenance Facility in Baltimore, MD.

Employees in this class are considered Essential Employees and may be required to work rotating shifts, to include weekends, evenings and nights. In the event of emergency highway conditions, employees are subject to emergency call back during scheduled off-hours. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve working in roadways, near high-volume traffic, and from bucket trucks. Employees wear protective equipment such as safety vests and helmets. Employees may be exposed to high voltages. Some heavy lifting of at least 75 pounds may be required. Extensive travel around the state may be required; employees in certain positions must be available to travel to meet the operational needs of the organization.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFIATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year experience repairing electronic communication equipment. **Six months of this experience must include the installation and repair of radio communication devices.

Notes:

1. Candidates for the ITS Technician I class may substitute completion of a one year program of study in radio electronics at a recognized training school, trade school or college for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates for the ITS Technician I class may substitute possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator's License for one year of the required experience. Employees possessing such should list the license number and date of issuance on the application.


Licenses & Certifications

1. Employees in these classifications are assigned duties that require operation of a motor vehicle. Applicants must possess a Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.

2. Employees may be assigned duties that require possession of a FCC General Radiotelephone Operator's License (GROL) or equivalent certification depending on their job assignment. Equivalent certification to the GROL includes Association of Public Safety Communications Officer Radio Technician Certification, Personal Communications Industry Association certification or National Association of Business and Education Radio License certification.


Additional Information

1. Employees in these classes are considered Essential Employees and will be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to Essential Employee status.

2. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, and will be required to provide the Administration with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees may be required to demonstrate the ability to climb to elevated locations to perform electronic work on high structures.

4. Applicants applying for MDTA positions will be subject to a background check , which may impact on employment. A history of arrest or conviction is not an automatic disqualification to employment.

5. Employees in these classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

6. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
