Position Highlights The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona seeks a postdoctoral researcher in computational seismology with a focus on urban geohazards. The candidate will be expected to work independently and collaboratively on projects requiring initiative and strong organizational skills, and to supportively collaborate with students.

Duties & Responsibilities

The
postdoc will work on a project aimed at utilizing 3D physics-based wave
propagation simulations up to 10 Hz to improve ground motion estimates in
urbanized areas in California. The central goals are to unify and optimize Community
Velocity Models, quantify model uncertainties, integrate non-tomographic
constraints on crustal structure, and identify key observational gaps by
comparing synthetic waveforms to recordings from the regional networks and dense seismic arrays.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in geophysics or a related field at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in any of the following areas is desirable
  • Collection and analysis of dense nodal seismic datasets
  • Numerical simulations of the seismic wavefield
  • High-performance computing
  • Machine learning applications in observational seismology
