Position Title: TOOL ENGINEER

Position Summary: This position encompasses multiple technical responsibilities, including tooling, applications, continuous improvement, and programming support for manufacturing. The Tool Engineer works closely with machining and fabrication team leaders, programming, engineering, quality, and production control to ensure customer quality requirements are met while supporting shipping schedules and cost estimates.

Reports to: Programming and Tooling Team Leader

Personnel: Not applicable.

Accountabilities: Accountable for understanding and following all SOPs and WIs related to job duties while supporting 6S and Lean Manufacturing concepts. Responsible for ensuring quality requirements and cost estimates are met in relation to tooling and applications.

Authorities: Not applicable.

Duties:

  • Investigate and evaluate new tooling technologies to support continuous process improvement.
  • Guide team leaders and programmers in selecting appropriate tooling for new projects to maximize productivity.
  • Serve as a technical consultant to support machining operations.
  • Assist with programming tasks, including discussions including programming, probing, and program verification.
  • Collaborate with machinists to optimize speeds and feeds at the machine and cutting techniques.
  • Participate in RCCA investigations to identify root causes and prevent non-conformances.
  • Write and maintain tool lists as required.
  • Create drawings and models as needed.
  • Provide speed and feed data, along with all necessary parameter information, within the TDM system.

Job Qualification Requirements:

Educational Experience - High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree in machine trades preferred.

Experience - Intermediate computer skills required, including proficiency with Siemens NX and Microsoft office products. Minimum 10 years of manufacturing experience with CNC programming preferred.

Physical Demands - The employee is required to:

  • stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
  • exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.

Certification Required - None

Visual Acuity - Near acuity and accommodation as required for reading computer screens, documents, machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in art and machinery inspection.

Hearing Ability - Accommodations as required to communicate with internal and external customers and the ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes requiring corrective action.

Working Conditions - Normally works in a shop environment and may frequently be exposed to:

  • High noise levels from operating machines
  • Physical hazards from moving equipment and production components
  • Breathing fumes, dust and mist
  • Skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.
  • Welding flashes
  • Move between buildings within the campus

The employee may be required to follow other job-related instructions and to perform other job-related duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
