Minimum Qualifications |
The University Libraries at Appalachian State University is pleased to invite applications for the Martha and Nancy Lee Bivens Distinguished Professor for Children and Reading and Instructional Materials Center Librarian.
To be considered for this position, candidates will have the following:
- An ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent advanced degree;
- At least five (5) years of experience working in the field of librarianship and children's and young adult literature;
- At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience curating a curriculum materials center collection.

The Appalachian State University Libraries are essential teaching and research partners, inspiring and guiding all who pursue knowledge. The University Libraries welcome nearly 800,000 visitors every year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The Martha and Nancy Lee Bivens Distinguished Professor for Children and Reading and Instructional Materials Center Librarian will work closely with the College of Education, education librarians, and the
IMC staff to promote the growth and development of the
IMC collection, and contribute to its instructional offerings, reference services, and programming outreach. They will coordinate activities that provoke enthusiasm and excitement for reading among children, and prepare future teachers to instill a lifelong love of literature in their students. They will utilize the innovative resources in the Libraries, such as the Makerspace and Recording Studios, to support children and reading. The successful candidate will consult and collaborate with other faculty, maintain a high level of professional service and scholarship, and advance the reputation of the
IMC in ways suitable to their background and talents. This position is a member of the
IMC Division.
To successfully engage in these efforts, the person in this role will:
- Serve as a liaison to the faculty and students of selected departments in the Reich College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences by collaborating with faculty and providing information literacy instruction and research consultations;
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, and promotion of the Justice-Query Instructional Materials Center (IMC) and its collection;
- Establish and maintain a visible presence on campus and beyond by promoting literacy and reading in the campus and local communities through class visits, activities, and events, including planning and organizing the Appalachian Children's Literature Symposium;
- Continually assess the curricular and research needs and monitor curricular changes in the Reich College of Education as it relates to the activities and collections of the IMC;
- Collaborate with the Special Collections Research Center on the Beulah C. Campbell Collection of original illustrations of children's books;
- Manage the endowment fund associated with the position for the purposes of organizing events, enhancing the IMC collection, conducting research, and traveling for professional development;
- Engage in an active program of scholarship and professional service as described in the Plan for the Martha and Nancy Bivens Distinguished Professor, the University's Faculty Handbook, and the Libraries' Bylaws and Foundational Documents;
- Collaborate with donors to establish and maintain strong relationships in support of IMC's mission and children's literature and literacy programming;
- Other duties as assigned that align with the needs of the IMC and/or University Libraries.

Suggested Salary Range |
The salary range is $68,000 - $72,000 for Associate Professor and $85,000 - $97,000 for Full Professor. The annual stipend for the distinguished fellowship starts at $8,000. The total salary and stipend are determined by qualifications and experience. |

ABD Description |
ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
