HJF is seeking a Biostatistician to provide biostatistical support to the VHA Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence (AHBPCE). This position is pivotal in analyzing large, complex datasets to inform research and clinical care related to airborne hazard and burn pit exposures among Veterans. The Biostatistician will design statistical methodologies for research studies, manage and analyze multi-site data, develop standardized approaches for analysis, and generate insights to improve Veteran health outcomes.

This position will be in support of the New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (NJ WRIISC) and it's sub-centers, the VHA Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence (AHBPCE), and Exposure-Related Care Transformation (EXPRT) Center. Research activities broadly cover post-deployment health conditions attributable to military environmental exposures. NJ VA WRIISC is a national post-deployment health resource for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). WRIISC develops and provides post-deployment health expertise to Veterans and their health care providers through research activities as well as through its specialty clinical programs, education, and risk communication.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.



  • Design and implement statistical methodologies for studies on airborne hazard exposures.
  • Collaborate with researchers to develop study questions and designs.
  • Provide statistical support for ongoing clinical and translational research projects.
  • Conduct statistical power analyses and advise on grant proposals.
  • Develop standardized approaches for data collection and analysis across multiple sites.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity through validation, checks, and quality control measures.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures for data management and statistical analysis.
  • Prepare statistical summaries for peer-reviewed publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Generate data-driven insights to inform clinical care guidelines.
  • Share statistical methods and insights at symposia, journal clubs, and with collaborators.
  • Serve on AHBPCE committees such as the Pilot Project Program, Visiting Scholar Program, and Data Repository oversight.
  • Review research applications and proposals, providing critique and interpretation of data.
  • Support special projects advancing the AHBPCE research mission.
  • Attend weekly and project-specific AHBPCE meetings, contributing expertise and recommendations.
  • Maintain required VHA training, including VA Privacy, Security Awareness, and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification.


Supervisory Responsibilities



  • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; Conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.


Education and Experience



  • Doctorate degree in Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in biostatistics or a related research field
  • Demonstrated expertise in data analysis, statistical modeling, and study design


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Requires expertise in statistical modeling, data visualization, and effective communication of findings for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of medical science and research.
  • Ability to make effective presentations and publish.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Clearance, including background check and drug screening.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods


Work Environment



  • Takes place in a office or laboratory environment.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $120,600-$224,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
