Essential Job Duties |
Support university-industry cooperative forest research program by species testing, tree breeding, conservation of genetic resources, and forest genetics research, in collaboration with industry members. Focus on development of terrestrial lidar applications for forest measurement and inventory, and site-species matching using climatic data, and the Camcore database of species and genetic test measurement data. Analyze data and develop new software applications for use by our members. International travel to visit member companies inspecting our collaborative long-term field trials testing different species and genotypes, advising members on tree breeding, silviculture, and forest management, and discussing research results and new research opportunities. Participation in 5-8 international technical visits to Camcore members in North, Central and South America, east and southern Africa, and Indonesia per year. Technical visits are made to support member's tree improvement programs and their research goals. Provide training and advice on good forestry practices in nurseries, seed orchards, and plantations. Present research and outreach results at regional, national, and international meetings. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
PhD in Forest Genetics, Forest Management, Forest Biology, Forestry, Plant Breeding, Animal Breeding, Forest Biometry, Forest Mensuration, Silviculture, Wood Products, or
GIS. Must have one year of full-time work experience as a Forest Researcher, Forest Manager, Tree Breeder, Forest Data Analyst, or Forest Biometrist. Must have demonstrated experience with: international forestry research programs and operations, including the development of medium-, short-, and long-term research plans, budget management, team coordination and development, technical recommendations for operational areas, and multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance synergy with other areas; data analysis and practical programing experience with R or
SAS, providing insights, generating recommendations, and supporting decision-making to transfer research results to operational areas; database management and
SQL programming managing large datasets including trial databases and inventory data; operational silviculture, nurseries, harvesting, forest inventory providing active process improvements and transferring recommendations from the research program to these areas; and operational research areas including seed collection and processing, controlled pollination techniques, and the design, establishment, maintenance, and measurement of field trials. |
