Job Summary

The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Six (6) months recent clinical RN nursing experience
  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner.
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.

  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CNOR or other relevant specialty certification
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing (RN to Master's Bridge Program in lieu of BSN may be considered qualifying)
  • Successful completion of AORN Perioperative 101 training program
  • 6 months nursing or technician experience in a setting where sterile procedures are performed
  • Scrub experience in a non-nursing role or in a student nurse role Operating Room internship within the last three years
  • Completion of Bridges to Excellence or other "walk in my shoes" experience for no less than 24-consecutive hours in an Operating Room setting
  • One (1) year nursing experience in a Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Ability to don and doff sterile attire
  • Ability to maintain a sterile field

Department Overview

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including (but not limited to): ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, , Urology, and Uro-Gyn.
Additionally, our Children's Surgery Center provides comprehensive surgical care in the full-range of surgical specialties in an age-appropriate setting.

Department Specific Job Scope

The CN 2 entering the Operating Room Fellowship Program (ORFP) must fully satisfy all of the educational elements of the training program (didactic and clinical) to include, but not limited to, attaining the ability to scrub and circulate complex surgical procedures independently within 6 months of hire by meeting objective criteria, in a timely manner, as measured by the Clinical Nurse Educator of the Operating Room and validated by the department manager.

The Operating Room Registered Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for surgical patients during the intraoperative time frame using applying the nursing process.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Develop and implement an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Protect the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources. Protect the patient's rights, dignity, and privacy by acting as a patient advocate. Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice. Assure readiness for each patient using a team-based approach to room preparation, including the post procedure cleaning and preparation of room for subsequent patients to ensure timely access to care.

Assist surgeons; manage specimens; position patients safely on the operating table; perform general nursing duties and be competent in OR procedures as verified by specific competencies.

Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures; clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transports them to the Sterile Processing Department. Collaborate effectively with all members of the care team to assure safe, effective quality of care for each patient and family member. Coordinates transfer of care as applicable.

Work Environment
