Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the Director of the Strategy and Transformation for Enterprise Platforms (STEP) program, a new initiative at CMU. This program will be a key part of the Major Administrative Systems Governance (MASG) initiative, which is CMU's approach to coordinating large-scale administrative technology initiatives. The MASG initiative was established to modernize core systems in essential operational functions including finance, human resources, research administration, and student information systems.

The STEP Director will be responsible for establishing and leading the STEP program. This role will ensure cross-project alignment, establish governance standards, drive engagement, and foster effective project execution in alignment with strategic priorities.

This position will report directly to the Office of the CIO. The ideal candidate will be strategic with a strong background in program / project management, change management, and process transformation.

This role may also supplement project management roles on selected projects, supporting planning, process reengineering, needs and requirements assessment, funding request development, and oversight of consultants.

This role offers the opportunity to shape how CMU's core systems and processes will support a world-class research institution.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Central point of governance for transformation initiatives, monitoring time frames and providing support to meet the desired goals and outcomes.

  • Partner with the MASG Steering Committee to communicate program goals, objectives, and desired outcomes, facilitating program evolution over time.

  • Report regularly to the Steering Committee, providing status updates, risk assessments, and strategic recommendations.

  • Establish governance standards, project methodologies, and performance benchmarks across initiatives.

Project Management Oversight

  • Coordinate a portfolio of transformation projects to ensure consistent application of project management standards.

  • Guide project managers in schedule management, resource allocation, and adherence to agreed spending plans.

  • Maintain a centralized view of initiative progress, risks, and metrics.

  • Direct the creation of the required program documentation and artifacts.

  • As needed, step into a project manager role for specific transformation projects or phases.

Change Management & Communication

  • Direct the development and implementation of change management and communication standards and strategies.

  • Ensure timely and clear communication with the campus community.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Facilitate interdepartmental collaboration, aligning process transformation across business units, acting as an advisor, and maintaining relationships.

  • Resolve cross-functional issues and raise unresolved risks to the Steering Committee.

  • Facilitate communications and reporting.

Technology & Data Alignment

  • Collaborate with the Office of the CIO and technology leaders to ensure scalable and integrated technology solutions.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, in business administration, information systems, project management, or a related field; Master's preferred

  • 10+ years of experience leading enterprise-scale transformation or IT governance initiatives.

  • Substantial consulting leadership experience.

  • Experience working with senior leadership.

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate program objectives, encourage and empower staff, and ensure alignment with the business strategy.

  • Analyze risks and coordinate cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to build trusted relationships, navigate complex environments, and collaborate across diverse perspectives.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Program development and delivery with financial and resource constraints.

  • Expertise in change management methodologies such as PROSCI

  • Experience with at least one project/program management methodology, such as the Project Management Institute's (PMI's) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)
