The Research Engineer will be responsible for the smooth operation of the VIDAR Lab hardware and software stacks, including GPU clusters and related computing resources. This position will also play a key role in designing and implementing new features for research projects. The successful candidate will also lead the onboarding of new students and guide them in best practices for using lab computing resources. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in computer science (or related) and at least 3 years of technical support experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred:
Proficient in at least one programming language (Python strongly preferred).
Essential Functions of Position:
- Manage and maintain multiple GPU clusters and networked storage systems.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot hardware issues, and coordinate repairs or upgrades in collaboration with Temple ITS.
- Oversee the lab's Open OnDemand environment and associated tools.
- Deploy, configure, and maintain research software packages, libraries, and frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, CUDA).
- Contribute to the ongoing development and maintenance of deployed applications (web frontend, mobile apps, and Flask API).
- Onboard new students and collaborators to lab resources, including best practices for GPU and HPC usage.
- Provide ongoing technical support and documentation to ensure efficient usage of lab infrastructure.
- Collaborate with lab members to prototype and integrate new ideas into production-ready applications.
- Assist with data management, including the collection, cleaning, and organization of large datasets.
- Evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, or systems that could benefit the research goals of the lab.
- Work with project stakeholders to define technical requirements and timelines.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for all systems, procedures, and project-related developments.
- Present findings, updates, and recommendations in lab meetings or seminars.
- Serve as the technical point of contact with department, college, and university IT support.
