Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Student Health Services provides student-centered medical and wellness services which are affordable and accessible. Utilizes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to wellness and health care. Provides an environment of inclusion, respect, and appreciation of diversity. Student Health Services is responsible for providing primary health care to the student campus community in a professional, competent caring, and confidential manner.

SHS is committed to: providing reasonably comprehensive ambulatory medical services to all eligible students; promoting disease prevention through health education; providing non- classroom health education on issues that impact the student both physically and psychologically; provide ancillary support services (i.e. laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative); providing advisory, collaborative, and educational assistance to other university departments; and ensuring staff competency to support and fulfill this mission. The goals are to maintain quality of care, client satisfaction, affordability, accessibility, and suitability for operational effectiveness.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Medical Lab Technologist will perform tests and assist with the application of this information to each clinical situation. In the educational role, the employee will develop and implement staff laboratory relevant programs. Takes a lead role in the development and implementation of new procedures, instrumentation, and computer functionality. The employee also assists in appropriately maintain the laboratory area in a safety-oriented manner. The employee will assist in the development of laboratory policies and procedures; overall laboratory planning; budget preparation and responsible fiscal management, as well as other duties required by the supervisor or laboratory director. Assumes responsibility for one or more major on-going laboratory projects or functions such as performance improvement, safety, instrumentation, quality control, regulatory, administrative, staff development, or computer systems. Serves as a resource in area of responsibility.
Quality control another integral facet of service, involves: the participation in a structured program to demonstrate competency; troubleshooting abilities including but not limited to an aptitude for statistical interpretations and initiation of corrective actions when indicated. The employee works independently using a high degree of technical and decision-making skills to ensure an accurate interpretation of each test performed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Perform analyses as ascribed by Federal standards ( CLIA) or the product manufacturer; record test results accurately; report critical values to the attending health care provider; conduct and monitor all phases of quality control testing for all laboratory tests- implement correction actions; participate in proficiency testing programs successfully as designated by the proficiency program; maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment per manufacturer's specifications - keep maintenance logs; clean and disinfect the laboratory area according to accepted standards and ensure proper waste disposal per
OSHA guidelines; revise and update the operational procedure manual when indicated; conduct inventory of supplies and reagents as needed for laboratory services; compile monthly and annual laboratory statistics as required; develop a safety manual for the lab with revisions as needed, under the oversight of the lab supervisor and clinic director.
Considerable knowledge of laboratory procedures and polices applicable to the area(s) of work. Possess a high skill set of laboratory techniques. Must be knowledgeable of the basic pathophysiological processes and how the medical laboratory science is applied. Considerable knowledge of quality control standards and procedures.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA) regulations.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

  • ASCP or equivalent certification required
  • BS Degree in Medical Technology or related science required
  • 2 years of experience as a Supervisor required

Required Competency Knowledge - Professional/ Scientific
Duties

  • Demonstrates specialized knowledge in various laboratory procedures; in-depth knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology; and, knowledge of pathophysiological processes and the application of laboratory science.
  • Applies knowledge of information sources in biology, microbiology, chemistry and scientific methodology.
  • Applies knowledge of public health laboratory laws and regulations; sanitary bacteriology regulations.
  • Maintains quality results by participating in the quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records.
  • As a technical expert, serves as a resource and mentor to staff and ensures that technical requirements for regulatory agencies are met.
  • Participates in the American Proficiency Institute (API) Testing Program as designated by API.
  • Participates in Quality Control (QC) programs and understand current accreditation standards Maintains lab for COLA inspections.



Required Competency Laboratory Operations
Duties

  • Directs the daily activities of the laboratory of moderate variety and complexity; generates standard operation procedures; manages laboratory resources and facilities; coordinates services with lab equipment vendors; and, monitors lab safety.
  • Performs testing that requires specialized knowledge within a discipline and/or crosses disciplines as a technical expert.
  • Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
  • Maintains medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Assumes major responsibility for organizing, updating and reviewing departmental procedure manuals and technical resources.
  • Assists supervisor in the review of laboratory reports, procedures, and quality control.
  • Perform and document quality assurance and quality control activities to Federal, State, and SLPH regulations.
  • Assist in the evaluation of equipment for future purchase to provide more effective patient care.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with all purveyors of goods and services.



Required Competency Laboratory Testing and Analysis
Duties

  • Performs complex, specialized laboratory procedures; analyzes unusual results; researches new test methodologies; and, provides analysis of data from specialized tests.
  • Reads wet preps, Hematology differential slides, gram stains, and KOH preps.
  • Performs phlebotomy.
  • Monitors/enter and remove patient information on quest e-invoice platform.
  • Participate in verifications, validations, and implementation of new diagnostic assays.
  • Skill in the use of common laboratory techniques (i.e.: phlebotomy, pipetting, etc.).
  • Provide laboratory testing consultation to physicians, epidemiologists, nurses & other laboratorians.
  • Experience in conducting nucleic acid extraction, performing conventional PCR and real-time PCR, and comprehensive understanding of the best practices used to ensure high quality, accurate and timely molecular test results.



Required Competency Supervision/Leadership
Duties

  • Provides instruction and training in the performance of laboratory procedures including testing methodology.
  • Trains new employees in the theoretical and operational aspects of procedures and serves as a resource for less experienced staff.
  • Helps oversee and assure complete documentation of employee training, annual competency testing, and procedure manual reviews.
  • Supervise the work of others and instruct other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
