The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Columbia University's AI4VS Lab is seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to projects at the intersection of AI and medical diagnostics. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on novel AI-driven solutions aimed at transforming clinical practice, with a specific focus on ophthalmic imaging and its connections to systemic health.

Responsibilities

As a Research Assistant, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and evaluating advanced AI algorithms for various medical applications. The role requires experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc.), and expertise training large-scale language and vision models. Previous experience working with medical data is helpful. Your responsibilities will include:




  • Developing Expert-Informed Multimodal AI Pipelines: Designing and implementing expert eye-gaze guided multimodal (image + text) pipelines to improve the accuracy and efficiency of clinical diagnoses derived from retinal images.

  • Developing Expert-Informed Multimodal AI Pipelines: Developing and implementing algorithms for analyzing 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images, using techniques such as 3D CNNs and video diffusion models. This includes assisting with the preprocessing of 3D data and exploring potential AI attention visualizations using Augmented Reality (AR) techniques.

  • Pioneering Eye-to-Body AI Diagnostics: Designing and evaluating algorithms for "eye-to-body" projects, focusing on diagnosing systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes from fundus/OCT images


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.
  • Must have basic knowledge in chemistry, biology or physics, and related laboratory procedures, techniques.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Ability to conduct experiments or activities according to established protocols
