The EmPATH unit is a behavioral health unit designed to treat patients who have traditionally been cared for in the emergency department (ED). This unit, opening in 2026, will accept patients from both the adult and children's hospital. Candidates hired into our EmPATH positions will begin their employment in Fall 2025 and Winter 2026. Job Summary: The Unit Secretary-Behavioral Health works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Performs secretarial and receptionist duties that contribute to the smooth operation of assigned unit that provides inpatient and or outpatient patient-centered care. Greets and screens the public upon arrival to unit. Recognizes potentially dangerous situations with visitors, patients and families and takes appropriate action. Assists with facilitating optimal patient flow Maintains supplies, equipment, and forms. Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service, safety, and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce, patient/visitor population. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum one year of unit secretary experience preferred. Completion of one year of college or minimum one year of experience in medical field preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Basic knowledge of medical terminology, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and patient rights for behavioral and mental health patients. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use telephone, computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate with the healthcare team; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English (and Spanish preferred) in person in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to the position.
