The Executive Director of Development will report to the Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer for Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) with a dotted line reporting relationship to President of the Bridgeport Hospital. This individual will be an exceptional results-oriented professional who will build on the momentum of the organization's current base of supporters to take fundraising to new levels of success. They will have experience working closely with Boards, senior executive leadership, and other constituents to achieve ambitious goals in a fiscally responsible manner. The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to represent the organization and its mission effectively to a diverse array of audiences. They will be an articulate and persuasive speaker as well as a deeply skilled listener with confidence and personal and professional sophistication to effectively engage donors, community partners and staff.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Fundraising Strategy
    • 1.1 Provide strategic direction, leadership, and daily management to the staff of Bridgeport Hospital Development Office.
  • 2. Fundraising Execution
    • 2.1 Serve as a front-line cultivator and solicitor with a portfolio of 75 prospects; make significant requests for support from major donors, board members, foundations, and corporations.
  • 3. Organizational Leadership
    • 3.1 Partner with fellow executive team members to set organizational strategy as it relates to fundraising and deliver on organizational objectives and key results for philanthropy.
  • 4. Team Leadership
    • 4.1 Cultivate professional growth and engagement of the Development team leveraging the annual appraisal process and the Glint Employee Engagement survey results.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree required, an MBA, MHA or equivalent advanced degree is strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Ten (10) or more years of development experience with a proven track record securing six, seven and eight figure gifts.
Current knowledge of best practices in development generally and with an emphasis in healthcare philanthropy if possible.
Strategic experience across development in the nonprofit sector, including major gift fundraising, foundation relations, annual giving, legacy giving, board engagement and communication; experience leading capital campaigns.
Proven ability to map various revenue streams and understand the impacts and returns on investment, informing an organization-wide strategy and business plan.
Demonstrated analytical and strategic skills, with experience using data to support decision-making and creation of strategic fundraising plans.
Flexibility to create nuanced plans and objectives that adapt to the situation and/or partners at hand, while bringing to life an inspirational future for the organization made possible, in part, by a growing philanthropy program.

The intellectual depth, maturity, self-confidence, interpersonal skills and warmth to work effectively with the President, SVP and Chief Development Officer of YNHHS, executive team members, board members, staff, and donors and potential donors.
A demonstrated track record building credibility and respect through active listening, responsiveness, building strong relationships and inspiring others to action.
Excellent communication skills both oral and written with a reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of backgrounds; sophisticated writing and editing skills are highly valued.
Commitment to communicating strategies, priorities, and opportunities with all development team members; strong capacity to align teams around a shared vision.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Availability to work nights and weekends and travel to events as needed
Work is performed in a remote or office-based environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment.
