Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
As the University's Chief Academic Officer, the Provost has broad responsibilities for advancing the education and research missions of the University. The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (
OEVCP) provides the leadership for
UNC-CH's strategic planning for academic programs. The Provost's organization ensures the development and enhancement of high quality baccalaureate, masters and doctoral-level programs through ongoing program review and assessment, the raising of academic standards, and the expansion of research and other scholarship/creative activity. |
Position Summary |
The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (Provost) is the chief academic officer of the University, reporting directly to the Chancellor. The Provost leads the University in its academic strategy, planning, and implementation and upholding academic policies and practices while promoting the wellbeing of faculty and students.
The Provost is the chief advocate for faculty, and is responsible for building a culture of belonging that attracts talent that broadly represents the academic areas of the University and the state, local, and global communities
UNC serves. As Chief Academic Officer, the Provost is responsible for leading and providing guidance to the Deans of all schools and is the Chair of the Deans' Council. The Provost evaluates the deans, vice provosts and selected vice chancellors, works collaboratively with each of them to establish the vision and goals for their units, and provides strategic management of their budgets. The Provost works with the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations to make financial decisions and allocations to the academic units.
The Provost recommends and approves all faculty promotions, retentions, special hires, tenure decisions and new appointments and is also in charge of all searches for Deans, Vice Provosts and selected Vice Chancellors.
The Provost establishes the academic standards and policies which guide the student conduct process and the standards of professional behavior among faculty and administrators. The Provost manages and addresses, together with the academic Deans, any issues, concerns or problems that arise within the Schools, or among the faculty or the students if they cannot be resolved to satisfaction as part of other compliance structures in the university.
The Provost guides the conduct of research and scholarship and works to stimulate a high level of scholarly productivity on the campus. The Provost also oversees the development of an information infrastructure which enables research and operations of the University. The Provost provides leadership to the conduct of admissions and financial aid for students and functions to provide oversight of the quality and practices associated with undergraduate, graduate and professional study at the university. The Provost oversees the administrative practices associated with enrollment, course offerings, student tuition and fees, and of the policies and values which guide these endeavors. In collaboration with the Chancellor, the Provost is the administrative and academic spokesperson to the Faculty Council, General Administration, the Board of Trustees and the Employee Forum.
In addition to the academic Deans, the following university leaders report directly to the provost: Vice Provost, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Student Success, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, Vice Provost for Strategy and Resource Management, Vice Provost for Arts and Culture, Vice Provost for University Libraries and University Librarian, Vice Provost for Global Affairs and Chief Global Officer, Vice Chancellor for Research, Vice Chancellor for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development and Chief Innovation Officer, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
