Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the department of Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The Principal Laboratory Technician serves as a key contributor in a biomedical research laboratory, performing advanced molecular biology experiments, including DNA/ RNA purification, genotyping techniques (e.g., ATAC-Seq), and cell culture. The technician is responsible for recruiting and consenting human subjects in compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations, and actively promotes study outreach efforts. The role involves maintaining accurate records, managing databases, and participating in data analysis, including bioinformatics and statistical assessments. The technician plays a leadership role in daily lab operations, equipment maintenance, and student supervision and training.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs experiments using standard and advanced molecular biology techniques as assigned including DNA/RNA purifications, ATAC-Seq and other genotyping methodologies, cell culture, Research and analysis is conducted using various methods and in accordance with established procedure.
  • Responsible for the recruitment of human subjects, involving patient screening and consenting, in accordance with confidentiality and HIPAA regulations. Promotes research studies and is responsible for finding ways for maximal outreach to study volunteers.
  • Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of work performed and maintains a database as required. Data is shared with colleagues and published in scientific journals.
  • Performs and assists with QC of genotype, DNA and RNA sequencing data, phenotype data, bioinformatics correlations and assists with statistical analysis of data. Preliminary analysis is conducted in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains and keeps the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and safe manner in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serves as the primary technician in the performance of experiments. Trains and leads students through various laboratory related activities. In this regard, work collaboratively with others.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Associates Degree in biologic science, molecular biology or genetics plus two (2) years related experience in a laboratory environment.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous lead experience highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's Degree or Masters in biologic science, molecular biology or genetics preferred with laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques and ideally with coursework and/or experience in computational/mathematical biology, preferred.
  • Skills preferred for database design/management and bioinformatics including analyses of sequence data (FastQC, Cufflinks and others).
  • Specific experience with techniques listed in the job summary preferred (DNA/RNA purification, ATAC-Seq, Sequence Library Prep, phenotype and other clinical database experience).
  • Research experience with human subjects including recruitment of study subjects and IRB experience preferred.

  • Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Some lifting may be required: laboratory items and /or boxes up to 25 lbs. Computer data input.
  • Work Environment: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals. Follows all safety precautions in laboratory
