About the Job
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics is searching for an advanced aerospace engineering student to fill this internship position. This position provides technical support to AEM's classroom lab management. Hours are scheduled M-F between 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position has physical requirements and requires bending, lifting, kneeling, walking, and standing for periods of time.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the laboratory manager/staff scientist, this position will assist with duties including:

Laboratory Support (75%)
Design a new, multiaxis model positioning system for the closed return wind tunnel
Fabricate new model positioning system structure
Support ongoing wind tunnel maintenance and upgrades as needed
Perform other duties as assigned by Lab Manager

Technology Support (20%)
Update wind tunnel software to interface with new wind tunnel model positioning system
Perform other duties as assigned by Lab Manager

Department Support (5%)
Contribute to departmental initiatives, projects, and outreach events
Perform other duties as assigned by Lab Manager

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (or completion by start date) in Aerospace Engineering
Previous experience in the AEM department at the University of Minnesota
Project management skills, including vendor coordination, budgeting, and scheduling
Proven experience with CAD modeling and rapid-prototyping
Proficient in C programming language
Forcebalance or comparable high-precision instrumentation experience
Ability to work independently and creatively problem solve
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including clear technical writing and presentation ability
Good mechanical aptitude

Preferred Qualifications:
Extended coursework in Computer Science
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs
Wind tunnel or research lab hardware experience
Knowledge of electronics and ability to read schematics
Multiaxis motion control or robotics background
GUI development experience

About the Department

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) is in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota, which is a world-class research university with outstanding resources and programs in engineering and science, health sciences, social sciences and liberal arts. The department has vibrant and active research programs in all areas of aerospace engineering and mechanics including fluid dynamics, hypersonics, solid mechanics and materials, and aerospace systems and GNC. The department is poised for growth in both its academic programs and research areas and seeks to expand its faculty by making a number of strategic hires over the next several years. The AEM department has close ties with on-campus multidisciplinary centers, and convenient access to outstanding shared experimental and computational facilities, such as the Gemini-Huntley Robotics Research Laboratory of the Minnesota Robotics Institute, the Minnesota Nano Center, the Characterization Facility, the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, Institute on the Environment, and the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $16-$18 per hour depending on education/qualifications/experience.
