Our growing Northern California Solid Waste and Organics team seeks a candidate who will assist in leading the planning and development of strategies in the California Waste marketplace in coordination with the California Waste Lead, West Region Business Development Lead and local operational leadership. This role will work in close collaboration with the California Waste Sector Lead by advancing the waste practice through all service lines (e.g., facilities, landfills, organics, energy from waste, planning, etc.) with a focus on project management, planning and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The ideal candidate will not only assist in growing a California focused waste practice, but also support a wide variety of waste diversion, resource management and planning projects throughout North America. The candidate should be knowledgeable of, and or have experience with, recycling programs, source separated organics programs, zero waste, circular economy, EPR, and sustainability initiatives, particularly related to California. The ideal candidate should show interest in other new and innovative diversion programs emphasizing sustainable materials management along with policy and disposal practices. The understanding of potential changes and emerging trends in the industry will be a differentiator between candidates. The candidate should be confident working in a team environment, as well as independently, developing strong relationships and speaking to groups of people.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the California Waste Sector Lead with developing the business through writing proposals, engaging in projects, and other business development activities such as attending conferences and other networking events. This candidate will also be involved in the development of long range waste management strategic plans for municipalities including researching, identifying, assessing, and evaluating alternate diversion and disposal technologies and programs. Additional opportunities will be available to support planning and approval processes for a range of waste management facilities. They will also be expected to help prepare project reports, memorandums, and presentations by leveraging their knowledge of the audience's perspective. The Solid Waste & Organics Planner II role also encompasses a client focus by networking and establishing client relationships, developing leads and strategic thinking in future directions for both our clients and programs. Incorporating strategic communications and engagement with multiple stakeholders will be an important part of the job and projects.

Additional activities include the following:

  • Serve on project teams in a technical role for Solid Waste and Organics planning work. This includes implementation of HDR's QA/QC procedures.
  • Participate in strategic and tactical planning activities and the development of strategic positioning within California and surrounding areas.
  • In partnership with the West Region Waste Business Development Lead, assess marketplace opportunities, gauge HDR prospects, and development of prioritized client targets.

  • Assist with the EPR projects in California and other states, as well as assist in building new strategic clients and opportunities.
  • Expand projects in compostable and recyclable materials, organics markets and composting.

You should expect to be leading and coordinating projects in California and across the West Region, collaborating with staff in our various offices or with strategic partners.
