Student Internship

Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities

Number of Positions: 3

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $16.20

This summer, learn how the City of Chicago works through working for a department that serves people with disabilities in every neighborhood. During your internship, you will learn more about important disability issues, visit different City of Chicago locations, help with planning events, and work with our team on one of our programs. We are looking for applicants who are motivated, hardworking, interested in disability and want to learn.

The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is hiring student interns to join us this summer. Interns will work with staff who lead work at our programs including MOPD's Accessibility Compliance Unit, Home Modification Program, Career Center, Disability Resource Unit, and Training teams. Interns with MOPD may work on making our city more accessible with our team of architects, answer questions from members of the public about disability, researching a disability-related topic, work on our podcast and social media or create a slide deck for a training, help make homes accessible through our Home Modification program, support our Career Counselors who help people with disabilities find jobs and more. The Student Intern Program is for students who are interested in gaining knowledge and valuable work experience in the public sector / city government. Work hours are flexible to meet the needs of students and the City Departments. These are temporary positions. Internships are limited to one academic year. Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one academic year) per City Department.

Essential Duties



  • Demonstrated interest in contributing to the work of MOPD to increase accessibility and promote independence of people with disabilities in Chicago.
  • Awareness of or interest in learning about the Americans with Disabilities Act and the disability rights movement.
  • Ability to build an understanding of physical and communication access including building awareness around aspects of facilities and events that ensure people with disabilities are able to fully participate.
  • Ability to use effective communication in addressing large and small groups.
  • Interest or past experience in developing content for podcasts, recording, editing, and posting podcasts to various platforms for distribution.
  • Interest or past experience in working with transition-aged students (experience working with students with disabilities preferred).
  • Interest or past experience teaching basic job readiness skills (resume writing and interview skills).
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to review and enhance established curriculum and activities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Ability to establish professional work relationships with staff and partners.
  • Must be reliable, organized and have a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to accept direction/redirection and ask for help.
  • Ability to handle a variety of situations and perform various clerical functions.
  • Ability to use public transportation for travel to organizations site visit/tours.
  • Comfortable using remote meeting/conferencing programs, i.e., MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.
  • Computer proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office products, i.e., Word, Power Point, Excel, Google- Docs, Sheets, Slides and social media.

Hours: 20-30 hours weekly

Salary: $ 16.20/hr.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, graduate program or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/ information technology school.
  • Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e. summer
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications -Word, Excel and Power Point


NOTE: At time of application, you must attach a copy of your resume, current transcript with GPA OR if first term freshman/graduate student a letter of acceptance. You must provide Enrollment Verification at time of processing.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The candidate that possesses the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on their interview, will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:



  • Sophomore Bachelor level student majoring in Public Health, Social Work, Business, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Disability Studies, or pre-law.
  • Previous experience working in the following areas: Architecture, Pre-Law, rehabilitation Sciences (OT, PT, etc.).
  • Previous experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Bilingual (including ASL).
  • Previous experience in customer service.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Word.


Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
