Job Description

Accepts incoming specimens for the Accessioning area. Verifies receipt of specimen, correctly identifies specimen, labels and prepares the sample for testing. Registers patients, orders tests for certain predefined patient types. Performs related clerical duties involving typing, basic computer functions, filing, office telephone communications as well as receptionist duties. May order and receive laboratory supplies and maintain appropriate stock levels.

Job Responsibility




  • * Verifies receipt of specimens delivered to Accessioning Area and specimens picked up by staff.

    • Assures each specimen corresponds to label and date of draw/collection.
    • Verifies data on specimen label correctly corresponds to data in laboratory computer information system.
    • Enters receipt of verified specimen into computer system.

  • * Identifies and adheres to appropriate handling techniques for all specimens.

    • Centrifuges only those specimens that require it.
    • Assures centrifuge is balanced, set at proper speed, time and temperature.
    • Uses care when separating serum from cells

  • * Properly identifies aliquots by specimen number, name, date, test, precautions and special handling

    • Maintains a clean and neat work area
    • Organizes work during heavy workload situations to expedite patient results.

  • * Delivers specimens from Accessioning Area to various sections of the laboratory for testing.

    • Delivers specimen to appropriate area in a timely manner with required labels.

  • * Picks up computer printouts of patient test results from data processing, sorts and delivers.
  • * Transports specimens from designated hospital areas at specified times.

    • Upon receipt of specimen, verifies specimen's identification, labeling and specimen type.
    • Identifies discrepancies in specimen identification and notifies appropriate staff.

  • * Answers lab telephone inquiries.Provides status of lab tests and results, as appropriate.
  • * Uses Infection Control Practices and Procedures.

    • Utilizes protective barriers
    • Utilizes personal protective equipment (i.e gloves, goggles, respirators, gowns and hearing protection).
    • Demonstrates correct gloving technique and hand washing technique.
    • Properly disposes hazardous materials as per departmental policy and procedure (i.e chemical, biological and radioactive).Utilizes scientifically accepted injury prevention techniques or engineering controls to reduce the opportunity for patient and employee exposures (i.e disposal of syringes in puncture resistant container, splash guard, etc.).

  • * Orders and receives laboratory supplies and maintains appropriate stock levels.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification




  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Previous clerical experience in a medical setting, preferred.
  • Typing skills, required. Knowledge of office and clerical procedures as well as laboratory computer system, a plus.
