Join Our Stationary Engineer Training Program - Build a Skilled Career with Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins is addressing the critical shortage of stationary engineers in Maryland by launching a unique earn-while-you-learn program in partnership with ABC. We're hiring four Stationary Engineer Skilled Worker 1s to join this exciting new pathway.Staff will attend classes two evenings a week at nearby ABC, apply skills on the job, and progress annually through a structured combination of education and hands-on experience.

Participants will:





  • Attend classes at ABC two evenings per week



  • Apply classroom knowledge on the job in real-time



  • Advance through clearly defined steps, gaining pay and responsibility as they meet training and licensing milestones:



  • After 2,000 work hours + Grade 5 license Promote to Skilled Worker 2



  • After 4,000 hours + Grade 4 license Promote to Skilled Worker 3



  • After 6,000 hours + Grade 3 license Promote to Skilled Worker 4



  • After 8,000 hours + Grade 2 license Promote to Plant Operator





This is more than a job-it's a structured, supported career path with long-term growth in facilities operations at one of the world's leading institutions.

The Stationary Engineering Skilled Worker I starts, stops, and collects operating data. Adheres to good engineering standards of housekeeping and safety. Work closely with the plant maintenance technicians to identify equipment concerns and address smaller issues involving leaks and lubrication. Employees participating in the Stationary engineer apprenticeship will be given two years to complete step one requirements: passing exam for 5th level and 4th level stationary engineer, completion of 2000 hours in on the job training and completion of 3 credit hours of Boiler Operations and Safety approved by Maryland DLLR.

Full-time (40 hours)

Requirements/Qualifications:




  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Maryland Stationary Engineer grade 4 license
  • 3 credit hours of Boiler Operations and Safety approved by Maryland DLLR
  • Apprenticeship work experience in an approved trade program.
  • At least 1 year work experience.

Salary Range: Minimum $17.28/hour - Maximum $20.06/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
