Responsibilities

    Will maintain and input in system maintenance logs and effectively operate under the supervision of a System Administrator, Maintenance Engineer or Maintenance Manager.
  • Ensure the operational integrity, security, and performance of the VA's Linux/Unix divisional IT infrastructure by executing proactive, ad hoc, preventative, sustainment, and emergent physical maintenance across all server environments, in accordance with industry best business practices and VA regulatory standards, techniques and policies.
  • Ensure responsibilities are fulfilled during both 1st and 2nd shift operations, Monday through Friday and when necessary, on the weekends, to ensure consistent coverage and the divisions operational tempo of 99.999% uptime. This includes coordinating cross-functional resources, supporting vendor-specific field engineers during onsite diagnostics and warranty repairs, leveraging advanced diagnostic tools, Linux/Unix command-line expertise, maintaining compliance with inventory control, tagging, accreditation and lifecycle management standards, provide hands on physical maintenance when end user parts replacement is required, document and process all decommissioning and writable media destruction according to VA and NIST regulations -all while minimizing service disruptions and supporting continuous system availability.
  • Consistently maintain both routine and emergent maintenance logs, asset tracking at database required for VASI and divisional ATO accreditations.
  • Know that Server maintenance is the process of keeping servers working by deploying reviews that preemptively evaluate the status of assigned assets and their interoperability with required resources and functions. This is accomplished by completing the following weekly tasks on all servers:
    • Initial server design and setup
    • Lifecycle Management
    • Replacement research industry best practices and/or vendor compatible hardware
    • Present Findings to Service Line Supervisor
    • Reception of new equipment
    • Initial setup of all hardware
    • Work with Facilities to obtain Floor and/or RAC Space
    • Install Rack and/or Server in Rack
    • Work with Facilities to obtain Power and backup Power
    • Work with facilities to connect power cables
    • Work with networking team to obtain Internet cabling and IP addresses
    • Work with networking teams to connect network cables
    • Conduct initial Powerup
    • Initial system prep
    • Validate all components are properly function
    • Handoff to Service line SA and OS Imaging.
    • Perform weekly Preventive Maintenance Tasks
    • Work with SAs and associated projects to perform Disk Defragmentation
    • Ensure required monitoring agents are also active on all servers
    • Review Monitoring results for anomalies and performance issues


Qualifications

  • Experience in conducting routine system maintenance tasks.
  • Must be able to understand the routine system maintenance tasks and is able to work with Release Management to plan and schedule those task for the IT networks without disrupting normal workflow and must be able to identify needs for emergent maintenance, and assess appropriate course of action for system maintenance for ongoing maintenance issues.
  • Must have working knowledge Replacing defective Computer parts including but not limited too; Memory, CPU, Disk Drives, Motherboards, Expansion cards, Power Supplies and be able to Validate systems restart after any hardware maintenance.
  • Must have working experience with Linux and Unix Server Maintenance commands; including but not limited too; Check Free Space Available, Calculate Directory Size, Remove empty files, Count the number of files in a directory, Get the bigger files in a filesystem, List the largest files in a directory, Calculate the size of only certain files, Find Large Files setting boundaries, List the most recently modified files, Find old files, Find empty files, Package and compress directory content, Find files in Recycle Bin, and Find Duplicate files.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Clearance:

  • The ability to pass a Tier 4/HIGH Background Investigation
