Focus: As a Cold-Heading Tool Design Engineer with our organization, you will develop, test, and improve products and systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating innovative designs, conducting simulations using DEFORM FEA, drafting technical tooling data packages, tolerance stacking, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring the successful execution of cold-heading design projects.
Cold-Heading Tool Design Engineer Essential Job Functions:
Develop and optimize tooling package designs and drafting using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo) while ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
Conduct simulations using DEFORM FEA, hands-on prototyping, tolerance stacking evaluation, and engineering trials to validate tool design performance and troubleshoot issues.
Collaborate with manufacturing, tooling vendors, engineering, drafting, tool & die machine shops, and cross-functional teams to meet project requirements and improve existing products related to cold-heading equipment processes.
Apply engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing engineering processes to create cost-effective and efficient tooling designs to specific timelines.
Maintain a high level of technical documentation, analyze data, and communicate findings effectively to stakeholders.
Cold-Heading Tool Design Engineer Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree* in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering.
Minimum 5 years of experience in cold-heading tool design or product development in an engineering capacity. National Machinery cold-header experience preferred.
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo) and simulation tools (DEFORM preferred), and a strong understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T drafting. Certification in Y14.5 is preferred.
Strong understanding of engineering principles, mechanics of materials, carbide tooling interfaces, precision tolerance stacking, precision tool & die design, metal forming, and manufacturing engineering processes.
Ability to perform a high-level of critical thinking and technical problem-solving analysis, feasibility studies, engineering trials, detailed engineering price estimates, and calculated risk assessments.
Location-Specific Requirements:
This position requires successful vetting as an Employee Possessor in accordance with U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
This position requires access to ITAR controlled technical data, and as such, employment will be contingent upon the candidate's ability to access ITAR controlled technical data pursuant to an export license approved by the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, if required.
This position requires successful vetting for unescorted access in accordance with U.S. Army and Department of Defense access policies. The US Government does not allow non-US citizens on-site at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Therefore, to be considered in the hiring process, the candidate must be a US citizen.
