About the Job

Major job functions for this position include the following.
* Assist scientists in lab work, such as the preparation of liquid algae media and other reagents or solutions using standardized protocols.
* Accurately perform quantitative and qualitative analysis on samples using instrumentation including microscope, hemocytometer, etc.
* Accurately and comprehensively document daily logs and track progress of multiple algae cultures, or other workflows.
* Other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

* Percent time of appointment: 25%
* Term and type of appointment: casual
* Any other identifying specifications particular to the position; i.e. work hours, work days: Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-5:30PM for approximately 10 hours/week. The exact time worked is flexible. Typical shifts are around 3-4 hours. Profile One - Office/Lab Based: Time spent working remotely is occasional or inconsistent. Dedicated on campus work space to be provided..

Qualifications

Required (Minimum) Qualifications:
Experience in a laboratory environment. Ability to follow oral directions and written protocols precisely, independently motivated, able to manage time and meet deadlines, strong communication skills, meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability of work.

Preferred Qualifications: (Selection Criteria)
Major in science with interest in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, or related field. Applicants may have backgrounds in science, aquarium husbandry, or engineering related disciplines. Direct experience with and knowledge of general laboratory equipment is preferred. Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter with Summer 2025 hours of availability.

About the Department

This position is located in the UMGC Innovation Lab to work on a project sponsored by the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC). We are seeking a dedicated, self-motivated student employee at our site to work primarily in the Algae Culture Lab supporting zebra mussel biocontrol research (https://maisrc.umn.edu/zebra-mussels). The successful candidate will help to culture live freshwater algae species under the direction of UMGC/MAISRC scientists using sterile techniques. This position has responsibilities that include feeding zebra mussel adults and larvae in the laboratory and has a potential for additional aquatic husbandry or laboratory activities.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $16.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
