Summary

The Director leads comprehensive real estate strategy, planning, and management for complex property projects supporting corporate headquarters, operation centers, and grid needs. They provide strategic direction, set clear objectives, and motivate the team to achieve results and continuously improve.

This leadership position oversees four regional teams responsible for managing Duke Energy's utility operations across all regulated jurisdictions. The role encompasses a wide range of real estate activities, including:

  • Fee properties and conveyances

  • Facility and land acquisitions and dispositions

  • Easement acquisitions and releases

  • Land lease negotiations

  • Legal support and protection against claims

  • Acquiring perpetual land rights for electric and gas assets

Key Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Manage and direct a productive, motivated, and safe workforce

  • Establish strategic plans for organization structure and staffing

  • Provide training, performance feedback, and development opportunities

  • Set work unit goals aligned with departmental and corporate plans

  • Ensure quality and safety standards are met

  • Develop and manage team budget

  • Willingness to pitch in and help complete work as needed

Regional Team Leadership

  • Direct Regional Managers to protect Duke Energy's interests in land and asset transactions

  • Encourage collaboration among Real Estate Agents, Business Unit partners, Research & Data Specialists, Surveying Coordinator, Finance and Legal

  • Oversee correct processing of real estate and land transactions

  • Manage selection and contracts with 3rd party contractors

Stakeholder Relations

  • Establish effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Serve as a key contact within Real Estate

  • Interface with Legal Department on real estate law matters

  • Communicate with Tax department on property and income tax issues

  • Participate in professional organizations (e.g., IRWA, MUREM, SEE)

Industry Knowledge

  • Stay current with best practices, regulations, and laws in Real Estate

  • Research professional journals and publications

  • Monitor changes in real estate, tax, safety, and environmental laws

  • Maintain awareness of real estate market conditions

Qualifications

Basic / Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Business or Finance and 10 years of work-related experience, OR Associate's Degree AND 12 years of related experience, OR High School Diploma/GED AND 14 years of related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • 5 years' working in commercial real estate

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in managing people

  • Knowledge of regulated utility financial structure for real estate transactions

  • Strong communication and presentation skills

  • Strategic thinking and analytical problem-solving abilities

  • Experience in matrix-driven environments

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively

  • Proven leadership and collaboration skills

  • Capacity to develop consensus among multiple parties

  • Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously

This role requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in real estate management, strong leadership skills, and a deep understanding of utility operations. The ideal candidate will excel in strategic planning, team management, and stakeholder relations while maintaining a commitment to safety and compliance.
