Junior Specialist-Maselli Lab

The department of Neurology at The University of California Davis, School of Medicine invites applicants to apply for a Junior Specialist position in our laboratory. Candidate applications will be evaluated and properly classified based on their basic qualifications

Major Responsibilities and Designated areas of expertise

The Junior Specialist has the general duties of working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Junior Specialist will be involved in laboratory studies of animal models of myasthenia gravis and the development of new treatments under the supervision of the PI. The junior specialist may assist in data collection, entry, and quality control, study design and implementation, literature reviews and data analysis for preparation of manuscripts or conference presentations.

The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Maselli and the ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.

I. Research (90% Effort)

A. The incumbent will collaborate with other research personnel affiliated with research activities involving animal work (injections, treatment, behavioral studies), molecular studies (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, Gel electrophoresis), and general upkeep of the laboratory. The junior specialist will perform technical/routine lab activities required to accomplish the research project involving molecular treatments for congenital myasthenia gravis. Specific duties include:

Effectively plan and execute research project goals for each week

Assist in all experiments in collaborative manner

Actively contribute to publishable research by collecting and interpreting data

Actively participate in weekly lab meetings

II. Professional Competence (5% Effort)

The successful candidate will engage in research and professional competence activities with the project investigators such as research reports and talk/research presentations. The candidate will participate in all lab meetings, discussing ongoing and future projects with research staff.

III. University and Public Service (5% Effort)

The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, committee service, and other activities as applicable.

* Bachelor's Degree (of equivalent degree) with a major in Biology or a related field

* Experience working with laboratory animals is preferred

* Research experience in Biochemistry of Molecular biology

* Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, and running gels is desired but not required

* Demonstrate ability to work independently, take initiative, make critical decisions

* Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills

* Good written and oral communication skills

Bachelor's Degree (of equivalent degree) with a major in Biology or a related field
