Overview

The Lead Mechanical Start-up Technician is the responsible lead for all plant mechanical equipment. The Lead Mechanical Start-up Technician is the primary point of contact for all systems mechanical involving functional testing, commissioning, checkout and start up through the operation of the equipment / plant.The Lead Mechanical Start-up Technician is responsible for ensuring that established practices, procedures, and company goals are implemented in the key areas of safety, quality, and commissioning and start up execution at the Project Site. Competency in the areas of leadership, communication, and planning is key to success in this role.

Location & Travel Details: Location can be anywhere, as travel is 90% to worksites throughout the assigned project area in US.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Take personal responsibility for safety and environmental compliance, demonstrate leadership in safety at the Project Site, and show commitment to an Incident-Free workplace through Employee's own actions as well as by coaching and mentoring others.
  • Support Project Subcontractors, the Startup Manager, and other Company site staff with review and interpretation of technical information related to installation, testing, commissioning and start up. Make recommendations concerning installation requirements and communicate with Company and third-party Engineers concerning technical issues and design interpretation.
  • Interface with Company Procurement concerning technical items related to Company-furnished items.
  • Maintain relationships with clients, engineers, Subcontractors, and consultants, especially at the Project Site.
  • Lead and/or contribute to technical meetings at site or by teleconference.
  • Perform regular inspections of the work related to the Mechanical Technician's discipline of responsibility and support Company's Quality Department in verification of testing and inspection.
  • Review applicable turnover of documents and records for Commissioning and Startup.
  • Assist in the development of startup packages as required. Track and control all documentation required for proper maintenance of the startup packages.
  • Support completion of punch-list work and other construction completion activities at site.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of a detailed startup schedule.
  • Proactively plan for startup activities and major milestones (major equipment, chemical cleaning. Steam-blow).
  • Manage construction completion, turnover to startup, startup turnover to operations, and final turnover to the client.
  • Follow and enforce site safety program.
  • Assist in the development of procedures as required to satisfy the EPC Agreement and/or to coordinate the startup effort.
  • Assist in the advanced planning and preparation for startup activities and major milestones.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of programs for the control of spares, consumables, outstanding work and deficiencies lists, etc.
  • Execution of the startup effort ensuring compliance with the associated specifications and contracts and ultimately resulting in an efficient and timely turnover to the client.
  • Completion of thorough system walk downs/reviews to establish the completion status of systems and identify outstanding items to be completed.
  • The Mechanical Startup Engineer is the responsible lead for all plant mechanical equipment. The engineer is the primary point of contact for verifying all system mechanical functions through startup and operation of the plant. Activities include but are not limited to:
  • Verify mechanical systems are installed in accordance with design.
  • Confirm design operational feasibility.
  • Maintain "as-built" mechanical drawings and verify all Engineering/Field Changes have been completed and incorporated.
  • Ensure proper setup and testing of mechanical equipment is in accordance with supplier requirements.
  • Understanding, knowledge and competency of basic use of mechanical test equipment required for testing checkout, and commissioning of mechanical equipment or systems.
  • Understanding and competency of basic mechanical equipment checkout and commissioning.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of site commissioning and start up experience with progressive responsibility on Projects for industries such as Power Generation, Chemical Processing, Petrochemical, or similar.
  • Prefer working knowledge of testing, commissioning and start up methods in a specific discipline or multiple disciplines.
  • Previous experience as a Start-up Mechanical Technician or similar position preferred.
  • Experience in both new construction and revamp work preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.
  • When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior.
  • Other may duties may be assigned
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.
  • Proficiency with current computer aided design software preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret design documents (drawings and specifications), Codes, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to write reports, prepare written correspondence concerning Project needs and issues, and to document project activities.
  • Effectively communicate with Startup Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, Subcontractors, and site construction staff.
  • Effectively present construction information to Company Project Manager and Engineering.
  • Solve practical and technical construction problems based on experience and Project technical requirements.
  • Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Must be able to navigate obstacles while walking at Project Sites, climb ladders and stairs, occasionally lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds, hear horns and warning alerts, and visually inspect installed work.
  • Willingness and ability to be assigned to Project Sites 100% of the time from mobilization until Project completion with potential travel to Company, Engineering, or Supplier facilities for brief periods. May be temporarily assigned to a Company office location.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
  • May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; Use arms, hands, and legs fully; Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
  • Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
  • Uncontrolled environmental conditions: Constant change in weather and site conditions.
  • This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards; and see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Keep good balance and work at heights.
  • See well (either naturally or with correction).

HOURS:

This position is a Full-Time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to projects requirements.
