Position Summary

African American Student Services (AASS) is looking for a proactive and innovative Student Success Specialist, Sr to join our dedicated team. This role involves working collaboratively to achieve goals, tackling challenges with fresh and creative approaches, demonstrating integrity and respect, taking initiative to grow professionally, and adapting to changing environments and responsibilities. You will also support students using research-backed strategies to foster their academic, leadership, and professional development, helping them thrive throughout their higher education journey!

This position offers the opportunity to take a leadership role in the following areas:

1) Coordinate retention programs focused on enhancing the first- and second-year student experience, including the AASS Summer Bridge Academy, Sankofa Mentoring Program, Leadership Program, and develop additional workshops, programs, and initiatives to promote student success.
2) Provide comprehensive, integrated academic advising and student support services.
3) Engage in campus and community-wide committees focusing on student engagement, retention, academic, leadership, and professional development.
4) Contribute to developing, designing, and planning AASS programs and initiatives, including conducting research, collecting data, assessing outcomes, and supporting departmental reporting.

The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of AASS programs focused on the first- and second-year student experience. This role includes managing student recruitment and engagement, designing and developing curriculum and programming, and contributing to event planning to support student success.
The individual will collaborate closely with campus partners to co-coordinate a comprehensive delivery of services for new and continuing undergraduates, including academic advising, financial aid and scholarship support, career counseling, and holistic student support programming. In addition, the role is responsible for implementing academic intervention and retention strategies, while advocating for student needs and academic success. The individual will also support data-driven decision-making through the collection, analysis, and reporting of key program metrics. Further responsibilities include assisting with the planning and execution of complex projects and events, and actively contributing to departmental and university-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement, retention, and achievement.

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications for this candidate include:

  • Demonstrated experience serving as an academic advisor, integrated advisor, or providing holistic advisement to students
  • Demonstrated experience leading or co-coordinating mentoring programs, student success workshops, and community engagement
  • Demonstrated experience supporting data assessement either through student learning outcomes, program evaluation, or student feedback in qualitative or quantitative approaches
