Job Summary:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Clinical teaching of Medical Students, Family Practice Residents and Pediatric Residents
- Clinical Supervision and support of onboarding for Advanced Practice Providers
- Participation in Quality Improvement and development of Clinical Care
- Guidelines
- Maintenance of skills required for provision of high quality, patient centered, safe urgent/emergent care of children. Annual requirements include but may not be limited to:
- Two half-day Acute Care Education sessions put on by the Section per academic year.
- One high fidelity code simulation at the Simulation Center at CHCO and at least one code simulation at a local NOC site per academic year.
- Maintenance of PALS certification
- Maintenance of CME relevant to clinical work
- Attend other technical seminars as deemed mandatory by the section and/or practice site in conjunction with input from the Director
- Maintain a strong plan to utilize protected time in areas of Teaching.
- Teaching of house staff and medical students, referring facilities and physicians, transport teams, families and the broader community.
- Participation in and support of the clinical research activities of the Section of Emergency Medicine.
85% Clinical Time Expected to maintain 0.85 cFTE (clinical effort). Clinical Practitioners at 0.85 cFTE will be expected to provide coverage for 1170 hours annually. All clinical hours obligations are negotiable with the Section Head at any time. This coverage will consist of Children's Hospital Colorado and its Network of Care including Colorado Springs (in extenuating circumstances only). Coverage will include:
- Pediatric emergency care
- Pediatric Observation Unit medicine
- Jeopardy shifts (an internal physician coverage system for unanticipated absence)
- Practitioner must maintain active medical staff privileges at all other facilities where ED services are provided by the Children's Hospital Colorado NOC unless a site is specifically excluded by mutual agreement by the practitioner and the medical director of the Children's Hospital Colorado NOC.
- Expected to attend at least 75% of the official CME and section meetings of the Network of Care / Section of Emergency Medicine.
- Encouraged to participate in Children's Hospital Colorado OR with anesthesiology one time per year to maintain airway skills as well as other technical seminars as deemed by the section and/or practice site in conjunction with input from the medical director.
15% Academic Time The position comes with 0.15 FTE clinical time reduction for Academics. The candidate will perform research and/or quality improvement projects and contribute to the education of students, trainees and faculty in your primary area of interest, pediatric resuscitation and airway management.
- To assist in academic work focusing on pediatric airway management and resuscitation projects and education, you will be assigned an academic mentor.
- Outcome measures of successful academic progress include, but are not limited to:
- Initiation of projects designed to increase understanding and generate new knowledge to support improvements in patient care in your area of interest
- Presentation of project results as scientific conferences
- Generate scholarly products and disseminate your results beyond the University of Colorado School of Medicine through:
- Publication of scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals
- Online publication of scholarly work
- Development of educational curricula
- Application for intramural and/or extramural funding to support your academic work when/if applicable
Additional academic responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Aid research program efforts through participation in research and academic activities of the section.
- Generate scholarly products which will support progress towards promotion to Associate Professor and development as a physician-investigator.
- As a member of the Section of Emergency Medicine, there are expectations to participate in academic programs within the Section, in accordance with our academic missions. This will include, but is not limited to:
- Broad Section educational initiatives including a wide range of learners
- Teaching research principles and application to faculty, fellows, and other medical trainees and students.
- Mentorship of PEM fellows, residents, and medical students interested in PEM research, QI, or advocacy projects.
- Participation and/or leadership of research projects originating within the Section or from external collaboration.
- There will also be expectations to attend Section academic activities, including but not limited to:
- Section Academic Conference
- Section Continuing Medical Education Conference
- PEM fellow academic education sessions

Qualifications:
|
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree
- Board certification and eligibility in Pediatric Emergency Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
- Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Active Colorado Medical License
- Active Colorado State DEA License
Condition of Employment:
- Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check

- Three or more years' experience in pediatric acute care environment
- Experience teaching medical students and residents
- Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Experience with pediatric patient population; pediatric emergency, critical care or urgent care exposure ideal
- POCUS trained
- Experience with Pediatric airway management
- Experience with Pediatric resuscitation projects and education
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge
- Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injury patterns
- Understanding of and familiarity with resources to assist in making clinical decisions and diagnosis
Skills
- Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)
- Teaching of medical learners
- Effectively and respectfully field calls from referring physicians to facilitate referral to site appropriate for presenting problem/service requested and transport to site
Technical skills
- Interpretation of plain radiographs
- Foreign body removal
- Laceration repair, including vermillion border and nail bed repair (some advanced techniques can be learned on job)
- Incision and drainage
- Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations (can be learned on job)
- Nerve blocks
- Lumbar puncture
- IV fluid management of electrolyte and endocrine derangements
- Acute respiratory care
- Intubation (ongoing yearly skills training mandatory)
- Pediatric resuscitation (must maintain PALS certification and complete required annual mock resuscitations)
- Procedural Sedation (do not need to hold previous credentials,but must obtain credentialing at CHCO. Process in place for education and assisting with obtaining credentials.)
Abilities
- Work efficiently in a fast paced, acute care environment for 8-12 hours at a time
- Promote teamwork amongst nurses, techs, learners, and colleagues
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Work a mix of days, evening, overnights, weekend, and holiday shifts

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE: $225,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
