INTERNAL RECRUITMENT TO UC DAVIS ONLY. The Mohini Jain Presidential Endowed Chair provides additional funding to a current UC Davis academic appointee in the ladder rank series. The additional funding may support the endowed holder in areas of teaching, research, and service activities directly related to the purpose of the endowment.

Position description

The holder of the Mohini Jain Presidential Chair Fund will be a tenured faculty member at Associate or Full rank in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The holder of the Mohini Jain Presidential Chair Fund will conduct research on plant-based, vegan or alternative protein foods, with particular interest in nutrition, environmental impact and sustainability. The purpose is to give special recognition to the selected Endowed Chair and to provide supplemental financial support to a currently active, distinguished senior faculty member for broadening their teaching, research, and outreach. Support from the Chair is not to be directed toward any research that incorporates live animals or animal models in adherence with the values and cultural practices of Jainism. The donor acknowledges that the Chair holder may engage in such projects as part of their broader research efforts but will explicitly exclude resources from the Jain Chair in those instances.

Opportunities to collaborate with the Department of Religious Studies in activities such as but not limited to lectures, conferences, student research are encouraged but not required. The goal of collaboration is to create more opportunities for technical sciences in food, nutrition and sustainability with scholars working in the social sciences. Such collaboration will be at the discretion of the Chair holder.

The Chair term is for an initial three-year term appointment and may be renewed in accordance with university procedures for endowed chair appointments (APM 191, UCD 191). If reappointed, the Chair Holder will also go through a 5-year review during each reappointment that may not align with the reappointment terms.

Responsibilities of the Presidential Chair include:

* Teach a normal load for the department in which the Chair Holder is appointed including student advising and mentoring.

* Provide innovation and leadership in research in plant-based, vegan or alternative protein foods as it pertains to nutrition, environmental and sustainability.

* Engage in outreach activities specific to the designated intent by the donor including lectures, conferences, student research.

* Perform service to the appointee's home department and the broader community as expected for faculty at the same academic rank.

* Enhance the academic and intellectual life of the campus as a whole.

The Chair holder will submit an annual report on the use of the Fund including expenditures of the endowment income to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences each academic year.

The FTE will remain same as currently held by the successful candidate.

Chair holder will retain an appointment in their current department in CA&ES. Support resources will include normal departmental support plus income from the Presidential Chair fund endowment.

Candidates should be prepared to present a seminar that illustrates their research.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Applicants will be tenured members in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the associate or full Professor (at time of appointment) whose distinguished scholarship is nationally recognized.

* Demonstrated excellence in research and innovative approaches to scientific inquiry in plant-based, vegan, or alternative protein foods as it pertains to nutrition, environmental impact and sustainability.

* Demonstrated excellence in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

* Demonstrated capability for programmatic impact and leadership.
