About the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Physics at Georgia Tech currently has 52 academic faculty, and its graduate program is ranked 21st in the nation by US News and World Report. The School has a broad research program with strengths in astrophysics, condensed matter, atomic, molecular and optical physics, physics of living systems, nonlinear science and soft matter physics. The School is also a key player in interdisciplinary initiatives established within Georgia Tech, such as quantum systems, neuroscience, microbial dynamics, planetary sciences, and data science/machine learning. Its student body comprises more than 150 graduate students (Ph.D and Masters) and over 270 undergraduate majors.

Job Summary

Provide support services in the operation and maintenance of an academic or research laboratory to include performing analyses; setup, operation, maintenance and cleaning of equipment; and maintaining stock of supplies. Specific duties will be determined based on assignment and unit needs. Job Summary

This is a summer opportunity. The Sponberg Lab at Georgia Tech is seeking a tech temp at the Ph.D. level (Ph.D. or all requirements for Ph.D. met is required). The candidate will conduct physiology and biophysics experiments on muscle, primarily from insects. Additional experiments, data analysis, writing, and figure preparation on these topics and others related to the neuromechanics and evolution of insect flight are also expected. In addition, the candidate will mentor and train early career graduate students and undergraduates in the experimental procedures they are familiar with. It is expected that the candidate help organize, prep and execute a trip to the advanced photon source at Argonne national lab working with the PI and collaborators. Finally there will be additional lab maintenance and facilitation tasks as per standard animal care and handling in the Sponberg lab.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Setup, operate and maintain instruments and other equipment used in performing lab tests and experiments.

Job Duty 2 -
Order supplies and materials as required; maintain records.

Job Duty 3 -
Setup laboratory media/equipment for demonstrations.

Job Duty 4 -
May clean instruments, glassware and other lab equipment.

Job Duty 5 -
Prepare and process laboratory samples for use in assigned tests.

Job Duty 6 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
High school diploma, GED Certificate or Vocational School Diploma

Required Experience
Up to two years of job related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge in the use of instrumentation and other lab equipment, laboratory processes and procedures specific to assigned lab. Skills in inventory management and the use of specialized computer applications is required.
