Overview

RTI International seeks a prospect for the Genetic Counseling Rotational Internship within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) business unit.

The Genomics and Translational Research Center team conducts research that traverses the research spectrum from basic discovery to translation: illuminating causes, consequences, and interventions for human disease to advance public health and well-being of affected individuals and their caregivers. A hallmark project within the Genomics and Translational Research Center is Early Check, an ongoing, statewide research effort designed to offer voluntary supplemental newborn screening (NBS) to any birthing parent in North Carolina.

The intern will spend time with genetic counselors working on various projects. The intern will have the opportunity to tour the RTI Headquarters, on-campus NBS laboratory, and attend relevant meetings. There may be opportunities to participate in qualitative research, such as focus groups or interviews. The intern will learn about curation and interpretation of genetic variants, regulatory process, and IRB. The internship will include developing and presenting project.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the roles of genetic counselors working in a research setting.
  • Define the objectives, methods and/or results of two translational research projects.
  • Identify and utilize tools for genomic variant interpretation to inform return of NBS results.
  • Strengthen psychosocial counseling skills through observation of NBS return of results calls.
  • Have a basic understanding of qualitative research methods.
  • Describe the development of IRB protocols and the process for IRB review.

Responsibilities

  • Attend observational experiences with RTI staff and keep a log of completed experiences or assignments.
  • Communicate and collaborate with RTI genetic counselors to achieve learning objectives.
  • Work independently on a rotation project.

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences. Interns are exposed to the institute's mission to improve the human condition through projects, professional development trainings, and networking. Program participants have opportunities to engage with staff and fellow interns virtually and in-person.

Additional Information

This is an academic internship supported by a stipend. The role requires hybrid participation (virtual and in-person) March 2025 through April 2025. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.

  • Current genetic counseling graduate student
  • Eligible to receive academic credit (documentation required)
