The Senior Accountant serves as a lead accountant assigned to the Finance Department and reports directly to the Controller. This position is the College's primary fixed asset accountant and serves as backup for the accounts payable functions of the College. This position collects, compiles and analyzes account information in conjunction with state and federal laws, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) and College policies.

Job Duties

Fixed Assets

  • Record fixed asset acquisitions and dispositions in the accounting system.

  • Reconcile the balance in the fixed asset subsidiary ledger to the summary-level account in the general ledger, including depreciation expense and accumulated depreciation.

  • Prepare and maintain inventory tags on all fixed assets as appropriate.

  • Conduct periodic physical inventory counts of all fixed assets.

  • Maintain accurate location of all fixed assets in the accounting system.

  • Communicate with the state on all fixed asset disposals.

  • Investigate the potential obsolescence of fixed assets.

  • Create and monitor a system of controls,procedures,and forms for fixed asset accounting.

  • Prepare property tax returns.

Accounts Payable

  • Serves as backup in performing accounts payable functions and are responsible for processing all invoice and non-payroll payments.

  • Provide input for improvements in processes or controls.

Other

  • Serves as back-up to the other Senior Accountant, performing such duties as grant accounting, bank reconciliations and sales and use tax returns.

  • Assist in month-end closing process and report preparation.

  • Assist with year-end closing book (CAFR) and Legislative Audit.

  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Salary Range $48,671.04 annualized

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems.

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques.

  • Ability to supervise a subordinate professional, para-professional, and administrative support staff engaged in accounting activities.

  • Ability to interpret and apply the provisions of laws, rules, and policies to accounting transactions.

  • Ability to analyze financial information and prepare reports.

  • Ability to provide guidance and technical assistance to management, staff, and thegeneral publicregarding accounting operations.

  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of accounting systems and controls, identify problems, and devise corrective actions.

Infrequently, exposure to louder noise levels or physical activities, such as moving lightweight materials, might be required.

Minimum Education And/Or Experience

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in accounting; plus three years of experience in accounting, financial management, or a related area, including one year in a supervisory capacity.

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
