Given this context, the faculty in the Department of History, Politics, and Social Justice invite applications for a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Justice Studies in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education with a start date of August 2025. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside the classroom; producing scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline; facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences; engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams; participating in departmental, College, and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

The Department of History, Politics, and Social Justices offers degree programs in History, Political Sciences, Justice Studies, and African-American Studies. It also offers minor programs and General Education courses.

Department Required Skills
We seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in Justice Studies/Criminology/Criminal Justice, particularly courses related to our Forensic Science concentration, and an interest in teaching and working collaboratively across our undergraduate degree programs in History, Justice Studies, and Political Science. Candidates must possess the following requirements for consideration:

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college/university, postdoctoral or equivalent research experience, and the potential for attracting extramural funding.
  • Candidates must have two years of teaching and/or industry training experience in criminal justice topics in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars.
  • Candidates must possess effective written and verbal communication skills, and they must illustrate effective interpersonal skills.
  • Candidates must possess a background in Justice Studies/Criminology/Criminal Justice with a Forensic Science concentration or interest in statistics.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively across our undergraduate degree programs in History, Justice Studies, and Political Science with colleagues to develop and expand a cross-disciplinary forensics concentration and course offerings and enhance co-curricular programs

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
We welcome candidates with a background in Justice Studies/Criminology/Criminal Justice with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, innovation, and collaboration in working with schools and university colleagues. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research interests that include but are not limited to theories of justice and race; police and community; corrections; forensics science; cyber-crime/security; criminal justice ethics; emergency management, homeland security, and quantitative methodology.
Preferred years of experience, skills, training, and education for this position include:

  • Greater than 3 years of relevant field experience in criminal justice (theories of justice and race; police and community; corrections, forensics science, cyber-crime/security; emergency management, corrections, probation/parole, homeland security, etc.) AND/OR
  • Greater than 2 years of teaching and/or industry training experience in criminal justice topics in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars
  • Teaching/training experience in a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems

Teaching and Advising

  • The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Justice Studies and cross-disciplinary courses either face-to-face or online and must communicate continuously with students as s/he monitors student progress for student success.
  • The successful candidate must construct sufficiently detailed course syllabi prior to the first class.
  • The successful candidate will teach each class section, create and present relevant course activities, assess assignments by providing written feedback in a timely fashion, and evaluate student performance.
  • The successful candidate must hold office hours each week.


Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • The ideal candidate must produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline,
  • The ideal candidate must facilitate presentations at well-respected international, national, regional, state, and local professional meetings and conferences within the academic discipline area.
  • The ideal candidate will cooperate with faculty across the university and external to the institution as well as with professionals across the nation to form interdisciplinary teams that procure sponsored research.

University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement

  • The successful candidate must attend consistently departmental and College meetings.
  • The successful candidate will serve on departmental, College, and University-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
  • Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions related to justice studies.
