About The Job

We are seeking early career and experienced professionals to conduct biological field surveys and construction monitoring in California and Nevada. This position will lead, or help lead, surveys and monitoring efforts through harsh desert climates. Candidates should have previous experience surveying and monitoring for desert tortoise. Ideal candidates are ones that have been previously approved as a USFWS Authorized Mojave Desert Tortoise Biologist or have the necessary experience and qualifications to become an authorized biologist. The position is primarily located in San Bernardino County, CA and Clark County, NV. Residing in either of those counties is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities (may include some or all of the below):
  • Work with construction crews and field leads to document biological resources and compliance levels related to environmental regulations during construction.
  • Collect field data for use in project regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee the installation and maintenance of environmental exclusion fencing, wildlife fencing, sediment and erosion control devices and material and waste management.
  • Work collaboratively with construction personnel and regulatory personnel to develop solutions while implementing permit conditions.
  • Follow all Dudek and construction site safety protocols.


Minimum Requirements
  • Experience in performing biological surveys for desert tortoise
  • Background and/or coursework in biological field methods
  • Desert Tortoise survey experience in CA, NV and/or AZ
  • Must demonstrate solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with an interest to learn and grow as a project team.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment
* As a federal contractor, successful candidates are required to pass the following pre-employment requirements prior to beginning employment: pre - employment drug test and background check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous USFWS authorized biologist status or requisite qualifications and experience to obtain authorized biologist status
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of GIS and data collection applications
  • Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle

Physical Requirements
Working Conditions:
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather conditions and exposure to elements 8 to 10 hours per day. Frequently walking on uneven terrain.
  • Heavy to moderate noise, close proximity to moving equipment or machinery.
  • Exposure to materials, tools, herbicides and equipment used in construction and landscaping.
  • This job operates in a remote or office-based environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met in order to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Position requires consistently moving, walking, stooping and kneeling, and may involve walking/trekking in uneven terrain over long distances for extended periods of time.
  • This job requires working on a computer, sitting or standing for long periods of time in an office or remote office setting.
  • This job requires attending meetings, both in person and virtually as well as speaking on the phone with peers, clients, etc. Speaking, hearing and listening are required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Proposed Salary Range: $40 - $60 hourly*
*Final agreed upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including but not limited to an individual's related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
