What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated Solutions Architect to serve as the primary architect for cloud information systems such as information assurance, hardware, software, database, networking, systems security, and telecommunication.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Research and prototype solutions based on requirements, fit, and feasibility.

  • Architect solutions and systems to meet operational and development needs.

  • Develop and integrate solutions as a part of a larger operational ground system and development environment to enable national security missions.

  • Install hardware and configure various components of an overall system delivery.

  • Mentor and guide teammates and promote innovative ideas and out-of-the-box thinking.

  • Think with an enterprise mindset to ensure a complete product is delivered.

  • Troubleshoot architect tier tickets for the various environments.

    Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.



Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant field; Or an equivalent combination of education and directly related relevant experience defined by the following parameters:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; or

  • An Associate's degree plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or

  • A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience.

  • Experience in all the following:

  • Architecting complete computer solutions, system design, engineering, and system development, including familiarity with modern DevOps practices and tools.

  • Cloud and orchestration technologies (Ansible).

  • UNIX, Linux, or Windows Server-based enterprise architectures.

  • Hardware and operating systems, including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client-server principles.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Experience with:

  • Common software architectures (e.g., microservices, distributed architecture models, etc.)

  • Container technologies, using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, etc.

  • Linux server-based system administration. (e.g., account maintenance, data backups, system performance maintenance, installation, and configuration of new hardware/software)

  • Reading, interpreting, writing, modifying, and executing scripts (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell) on Windows or Unix systems.

  • Virtual machines and cloud technologies (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Open Stack, AWS, Azure, etc.)

  • Fixing failed software or system components (e.g., servers, processes, etc.) and identifying possible causes for system performance degradation or availability and initiating actions to mitigate this degradation.

  • Developing, testing, troubleshooting, and deploying large-scale systems for managing, processing, and disseminating data from disparate data sources.

  • Knowledge of computer networking fundamentals (e.g., networks devices, ports/protocols, addressing, routing, network access, identity, and access management, and authentication).

  • Knowledge of secure configuration management techniques (e.g., STIGs) and secure software development and deployment practices.

  • Skill in identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, availability, capacity, or configuration problems relative to the goals of the system.

  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance.



About Our Team:

The Computational Systems Engineering Department is a capability based organization that architects, develops, integrates, tests, and deploys large highly reliable mission critical systems using agile methodologies. We have expertise in R&D and Information Technology across many disciplines including large-scale software engineering, computer science, and computer engineering. Our specific capabilities include platform/cloud automation, computer hardware/software architectures, system administration, networking, cyber security, failover/redundancy, continuous integration, system integration/verification, and performance assessment. We leverage these capabilities to innovate high-rigor solutions while supporting existing critical customer needs. Our current responsibility includes support for nonproliferation and national security missions for the US Nuclear Detonation Detection System.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
