Brief Summary of Work for this Position
This position is charged with direct project management responsibilities for ensuring that formal (>$500,000) capital improvement design and construction projects are completed on time and within established budgets while ensuring the capital improvement to the University's facilities meets Federal, state and local building codes, as well as University requirements with minimal disruption to ongoing University activities.

As an Architectural and Construction Services ( ACS) Architect, this position is tasked with managing multiple complex capital improvement projects, typically in excess of $500,000 per project. Capital improvement projects for the advanced level are large scale and may be valued up to $150M, are extremely complex and technical in nature and involve those modifications to the physical educational and work environment requiring funding to implement.

Projects may vary from new construction of buildings and infrastructure to occupied, phased renovations of existing facilities and systems. Higher education facilities project examples include new and renovated buildings of a variety of types, such as classroom, office, multi-purpose, laboratory research, telecommunications and data centers, recreational facilities, and housing.

This position has direct responsibility for project management during the design phase. This includes designer and construction manager selection, contract negotiation and administration, coordination of design with university and state stakeholders, budget management, schedule management, bid and award. This position requires the ability to anticipate issues and formulate options to resolve them; manage multiple projects; prioritize projects; use goals to guide actions and create detailed action plans; and schedule people and tasks to achieve goals with minimal oversight.

*This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Licensed to practice architecture or landscape architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture or the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices and have both office and field experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture.
  • Seven years of progressive design and construction experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (personal computers, smart phones, tablets, etc.) and a variety of software for e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and information collection.
  • Working knowledge of AUTOCAD, Microsoft Office, MS Teams, MS Project, and Bluebeam or equivalent software products.

Required Certifications or Licensures

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • Licensed to practice architecture or landscape architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture or the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects.
  • Out-of-state licensed professionals may be hired, on the condition that they achieve in-state licensure within 12 months.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The 225+ positions of the Office of Facilities service the students and staff of the University's teaching, research/administrative space and over 1,621 acres of land and associated infrastructure. The Office of Facilities provides design and construction services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to State and Federal codes, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

The primary purpose of the Architectural and Construction Services ( ACS) department unit is to support education, research, expansion, and other activities of the University through timely and economical completion of design, construction, renovation and/or repair, and other improvements to the university's facilities. Accordingly, ACS administers design and construction for formal capital improvement projects on behalf of the University, Endowment, and other university associated entities. Formal projects are defined by general statutes as being valued in excess of $500,000 and are subject to oversight by the System Office and/or the Office of State Construction and governed by the State Building Commission via legislative authority.
