Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Lab Researcher IV - Port Norris NJ for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Under the guidance and direction of senior support staff and/or faculty, this position provides routine technical support and coordination of lower-level staff to support shellfish and finfish research programs at the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Conducts experiments in the lab.
  • Cares for live animals.
  • Collects biological and physical samples at sea aboard fishing and research vessels and/or from shore as well as processing of samples, data entry and maintenance of records.
  • Assists with data organization, analysis, reporting and dissemination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, marine science, ecology, or a related field and a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience collecting aquaculture data, ecological data, fishery-dependent data, fishery-independent data, and oceanographic data.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to manage and manipulate large datasets, and to write code for analysis of data.
  • Experience assisting in coordination of research projects and seasonal or technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with shellfish identification in the Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Experience participating in aquaculture and fisheries research projects in the mid-Atlantic region.
  • Knowledge and experience with various field sampling methods including fisheries cooperative methods.
  • Experience with field data collection hardware and software.
  • Working knowledge of one or more statistical software programming languages (ex. R) and their application to ecological data analysis.
  • Strong record of working cooperatively with the aquaculture and commercial fishing industry.
  • General understanding of offshore wind development and interactions between offshore wind and fisheries.

Equipment Utilized
  • Electronic measuring boards, R, DCS Linkstream, BORIS, Marel scales, GoPro cameras, chevron traps, trawls, hook-and-line fishing gear, Baited Remote Underwater Video cameras.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs and work at sea overnight for up to seven consecutive days.
Special Conditions
  • Travel and days at sea are required.
