The Research Laboratory Technician 1 is a full-time position, and the primary responsibility is to assist in ongoing research studies under the supervision of a Principal Investigator. Work for this position will include processing, sectioning, and staining of tissues and microscopic analyses in support of projects from skeletal biology labs. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. This position requires a person who has Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology or a related field, pays attention to details, is capable of working independently after training, possesses good verbal and written communication skills, and works well as part of a team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities comprise, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for ordering common laboratory reagents and other supplies and for assuring that supply levels in the lab are adequate. Prepares materials for shipping, assuring compliance with regulations for biological samples.

  • Operates moderately complex equipment including microscopes, centrifuges

  • Techniques used will include, histological processing, cutting paraffin and frozen sections from skeletal preparations, microscopy, performing histological stains and immunohistochemistry.

  • Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data collection. Data may be represented as graphs, charts, tables, illustrations, slides and narrative reports. Will learn to interpret data results. Has a high degree of computer literacy.

  • Aids in maintaining information in databases for plasmids. antibodies

  • Participates in upkeep of lab, performs basic maintenance on laboratory equipment (cleans, disassembles, stores, replaces worn parts) and reports equipment requiring advanced repair.

  • Participates in and presents data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.

  • Will acquire skills to be able to work independently and as a team leader, assist in training new laboratory personnel in lab techniques and procedures. Can supervise other members of the team in performing new techniques.

Education

BS/BA in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or biochemistry or related field is required.

Experience

Prior laboratory experience, either through academic coursework, internships, or employment. 1-2 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey experimental procedures, results, and challenges.

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures.

  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and instruments used in research experiments.

  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and scientific software tools.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.

  • Experience with sterile cell culture techniques, basic molecular biology techniques-such as plasmid purification, gel electrophoresis, and PCR. Ability to build upon these techniques, learning or helping to develop new ones as necessary, to conduct the research project.



Working Conditions

  • Duties will be performed in a research laboratory. No direct patient contact will occur or be expected in the future.

  • Must be willing to work with mice. Studies are directed at studying the effects of hormones and mineral ions on growth and skeletal development.

  • Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, Monday-Friday 8:30AM-5:00PM, but actual schedule may become flexible as experience is gained.
