Job Summary

Uses advanced professional concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
This clinician has autonomous professional responsibility for 5150 evaluations, emergency behavioral health assessments, level of care determination, and interventions with patients and families. The incumbent makes recommendations to medical staff regarding the level of care determination of behavioral health and psychiatric patients. This clinician will work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff and other behavioral health and psychiatric staff to assess and care for behavioral health and psychiatric patients and family members in Emergency Departments and other healthcare settings.

Department Description

Behavioral health care services at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals emphasize a collaborative family centered approach and interface with all systems of care that serve children birth to 21. We are committed to delivering culturally accountable, evidence based, and trauma informed behavioral health care to the children in our community, including those with the highest risk and need, and those who are marginalized or underserved. Behavioral health care services aim to be the premier behavioral health care institution for children in northern California, with proficiency in clinical care, training, research and evaluation and policy.

Required Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related area such as social work, psychology, family counseling, etc.
  • Prior work experience in a pediatric mental health setting, acute psychiatric setting, or healthcare setting where mental health crisis assessment of patients occurred.
  • Strong clinical skills in psychosocial assessment and mental health crisis intervention and counseling,
  • Understanding of how to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and ability to provide linkage with mental health resources.
  • Knowledgeable in child, adolescent, young adult, and family psychopathology as well as familiarity with psychiatric interventions.
  • Knowledgeable of ICD-10 and DSM-V diagnostic criteria and trauma-informed, culturally competent care.
  • Advanced skill providing individual, group and family cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable laws and ethical standards associated with profession.
  • Advanced knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication. Demonstrated active listening, persuasion and counseling skills.
  • Advanced skills in collaborating with heath care providers in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and EHR systems used in behavioral health clinics / clinical departments.
  • Knowledge of recognizing and reporting child, elder and dependent adult abuse. Awareness of limits of confidentiality in regulations affecting clinical social work practice.
  • Advanced skill providing individual, group and family cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • High level of expertise and of knowledge of suicidal and homicidal behavior, and the skills necessary to assess lethality, and to develop appropriate interventions.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Must exhibit excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work is performed with many interruptions.
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills, to work effectively in a fast paced environment with rapidly changing priorities and competing demands.
  • Must be able to occasionally flex time to handle emergencies.
  • Must participate in occasional after-hours on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledgeable in substance misuse/abuse assessment and treatment.

License/Certification


  • Must be licensed by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiners (BBSE), by the Board of Psychology as a LCSW, MFT, or Phd/PsyD
