Position Summary

The Gas Inspector 2 will monitor, assess, evaluate, verify, discuss, decide, resolve, report and document pipeline construction activities as to ensure that the CPS Energy design requirements, associated drawings and specifications, along with all Local, State and Federal regulations and industry best practices, are being met safely, effectively and in an environmentally safe manner.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Serve as field liaison between contractors, various areas of CPS Energy, and customers as needed.
  • Attend and participate in preconstruction/planning meetings.
  • Ensure Contractors are following the designs provided by Engineering/Planning and coordinate design modifications appropriately.
  • Perform field investigations to follow up on work completed and respond to customer concerns.
  • Review project plans/SWPPP/associated permits.
  • Witness all covered tasks regulated by 49CFR part 192 (RRC), such as gas pressure tests, tie-ins on live mains, starting up and/or shutting down any part of a pipeline, purging of gas lines.
  • Review/Complete all documentation to each project (maps, as-builts, service cards, valve cards, pressure tests)
  • Verify alignment of gas facilities and accuracy of locate marks and ensure all facilities are installed to CPS Energy standards and specifications.
  • Identify, stop, and report any safety infractions to CPS Energy management and/or contract crew management.
  • Coordinate the utilization of internal crews with contractors for tie-ins and pressure operation applications (Pressure Control, Welders, Stopple Crews)
  • Perform NRIs on contractors working near supply and transmission pressure facilities.
  • Responsible for meter change outs and coordinating the relighting of appliances.
  • Inspect larger Civic and System projects that include Supply or Transmission Pressures.
  • Assist in training and mentoring of Inspector Construction I level employees.
  • Participate in the Gas Management Leadership Program


Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Aptitude and experience in reading and interpreting construction designs.
Hands on experience with reconciliation of materials and footages at end of projects.
Multitasking to inspect several ongoing projects.
Experience with red line as-builts necessary.
Intermediate skills with Microsoft applications.
Must possess effective oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience in GIS navigation to verify feeds and locations of gas facilities.
  • NACE, CWI, ASNT Certifications

Working Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events. After hours work may be required.
