Job Summary

Under supervision of the Warrior Bridge Program Coordinator, the Peer Support Specialist is responsible for support of any individual and/or group of clients as outlined in the Employment/Person Centered Plan of Services. Work must be performed according to Employment Source policies and the Warrior Bridge WRAP Services and Support requirements. Employee shall meet required credentialing qualifications (State Approved Peer Support Specialist Program), service provision documentation, and professional expectations and have a relatable lived experience. Work hours vary according to needs of client(s).

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Assist veterans in making informed choices about their care and services and other life decisions affecting their illness.
  • Provide peer support, employment assistance and resource navigation to improve the quality of life and access to resources for veterans and their families.
  • Teach wellness management strategies and incorporate self-management plans/tools for use in the workplace and in personal lives.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain positive relationships with families, VR Counselors, Behavioral Health Care personnel,and Employment Source personnel to ensure referral and service coordination. Maintain up-to-date employee information as required for case files and funding sources.
  • Assist veterans with accessing behavioral health services, connect them to vocational rehabilitation supports, and address food and housing stability.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Engage in various skill building activities for clients such as learning how to maintain stable housing, bill paying (budgeting), cleaning, organizing belongings, and building social skills/networks according to cultural and personal preferences of the individual and his/her medical needs.
  • Assist with self-help, advocacy, pre-crisis support, and facilitating an individual with speaking with their employer regarding reasonable accommodations.
  • Attend treatment team meetings with individual to promote the individual's use of self-directed advocacy tools; teach individuals techniques for developing Person Centered Plans and/or Employment Plans; how to ask for appropriate services in the community planning process.
  • Link individuals to support groups in the community to learn from other peers, problem solve through work situations, and decrease social isolation.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience and Certification(s)

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED), required.
  • Certification from State Approved Peer Support Specialist Program required within 90 days of hire.
  • Must have documented life experience with a mental illness or substance abuse disorder.
  • Valid driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation to perform work-related travel required. Eligible drivers must have a good motor vehicle record (MVR).
  • Certification from am ACRE or APSE approved Suported Employment Program required within 12-months of hire or Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic academic skills to teach skill building activities and document and maintain required records.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written form.
  • General knowledge and lived experience, as a recipient or former recipient of services, with a mental illness and/or developmental disability.
  • Knowledge of resources in the local community.
  • Ability to be preceptive of client(s) in achieving and maintaining rehabilitative and recovery goals to successfully address employment and daily living goals.
  • Ability to be perceptive of client(s) needs and link to resources and provide training as necessary for employment and attainment of personal goals.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, agencies, and business representatives.
  • Proficiency in use of Word, Access, and Outlook.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
